WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Didn't someone tell you to respect your elders?

From generation to generation, children are taught to respect their elders. Apparently this does not hold true once you have hit superstar status. Or in the case of Amy Winehouse, once you have a #1 hit in the U.K. Winehouse recounted a meeting with the newly knighted singer and labelmate at a recent awards ceremony, where she refused to stand, or allow her father to stand, during an ovation for U2. The firecracker singer mumbled "shut up" throughout Bono's acceptance speech, and when he later introduced himself, saying it was "lovely to meet you," all Winehouse could muster was a cool kiss-off of "Thank you for funding my albums. Bye." What is this world coming to when someone like Bono can't get a little respect from a newbie to the music industry? I am not the biggest fan of U2 or Bono, but looking at Amy's credits I wonder what have you done?

CrashPryor says been there, thought that, bought the T...your closing sentence says it all...she's got -shirt and soundtrack, son...nothing...NATHAN...the big bupkes...but then, that's what being young's all about: petulance...she'll learn soon enough that diplomacy trumps exuberance every time...now 'scuse me while I slap on a couple of 78s...(kidding)...

  2. SamTheButcher says Oh, it's fashionable to slag Bono these days. Whatever. Or, in the language of the kiddos, whatEV. Goddamn I'm old. I'd yell at the kids to get offa my lawn, but it's under 3 feet of snow at the moment.

  3. Jonh Ingham says It's in the punk textbook - be young, snotty and disrespect your elders. Send her to bed without her supper. I wonder who Bono was rude to in his early days?

  4. Smooth Hegemon says I am all for proper behavior and respectful conduct but I ain't gonna lie...Not only do I respect Winehouse for having the chutspah to fly in the face of a legend (for better or for worse) but I personally would have given Bono a good punch to the nuts as the "cherry on top."

  5. awoodyard says I think its actually entertaining to hear of Bono getting less than a royal treatment. I don't know any back-story of why she had that attitude or anything and I'm all for people at least being civil to each other. BUT I don't think Bono will die of ego-starvation just because a young upstart such as ms. winehouse said something less than praise to him.

  7. Violet Grey says According to her Wikipedia entry she's got a little problem with the booze. So she's really just some drunken twat that runs her mouth when she gets pissed. Great, just what the world needs.

  8. awoodyard says Yeah, I've heard about her drunken antics. One might even assume she'd been nipping a bit before the rude encounter with Sir Bono, but come on now, really, who doesn't get sauced everyday and bad mouth Bono.... .....I'm not the only other one.....right?

  9. dermahrk says I see a lot about her in the UK music mags but haven't heard her. On the other hand, Bono has always been Bore-o to me. After I heard Joshua Tree, I told the friend who loaned it to me: "Wow. These guys really need to be locked in a room with Jerry Lee Lewis records for a few months". And Smooth Hegemon comes out flailing again! Ever considered doing a movie with Clint Eastwood as your trainer?

  12. Rawkkiddoh says I am one of the many haters of Bono, that I will admit. However, he had to do something to become Sir Bono, and its not like he hasn't made great music. I dare someone to say the Joshua Tree is not in their collection. I am just tired of these teen punks who feel a little fame buys them the right to be complete jerks.

  13. chucky says Given that the one song I have by Amy Winehouse is her bragging about refusing to get treatment for alcoholism - I would guess that her attitude is part of her image. It just wouldn't do for her to be polite to people. She's the UK Avril Lavigne. Bah on her and bah on Bono.
