Let's Name Places!

Posted over 2 years ago
I recently saw a great post from Terry Staunton, you can read it here..................... http://mog.com/Terry_Staunton/blog_post/40107 When I saw the title, I immidiately thought of the song by Hank Snow, I've Been Everywhere. As I read through, I saw it was a post for names of artists that made reference to other artists in their songs.I read the post right, but got the message wrong. Being from Minnesota, you don't get a lot of name dropping of the good old midwest. However, if you didn't get mentioned in this song, I am not quite sure where you live."I've been to Reno Chicago Fargo Minnesota Buffalo Toronto Winslow SarasotaWichita Tulsa Ottawa Oklahoma Tampa Panama Mattawa La PalomaBangor Baltimore Salvador Amarillo Tocopilla Barranquilla and Padilla I'm a killerI've been everywhere man..."So here is your chance to list what song best represents your home town. Thank you again to Terry for the inspiration behind this. Oh, and bonus points if its a song that drops a place somewhere in Minnesota.

  1. Dale says I still get giddy every time I listen to the White Stripes' "Seven Nation Army", especially hearing Jack White sing, "I'm going to Wichita."

  2. chucky says Hmmm...Old 97s Lonely Holiday mentions Fayetteville. But there are alot of Fayetteville's so I doubt it's the one I grew up in. Not hometown but homestate: Guttermouth - Nice Place to Visit "The nascar whores of North Carolina.." (what a *great* endorsement.) Current state: The Nappy Roots - Roun' The Globe "Hit VA where they do nothing but cook.."

  5. Zeroskilz says Dale, need I remind you of Soul Coughing's "True Dreams of Wichita"? I have no songs for Indianapolis. :(

  6. Dale says Hmm, not so much remind as introduce. :$

  7. Rawkkiddoh says Nixne, might as well go with Less Than Jake's - Gainsville Rock City Zero, might want to check out the song by the Bottle Rockets, "Indianapolis" [Chorus] Can't go west, can't go east I'm stuck in Indianapolis with a fuel pump that's deceased Ten days on the road now I'm four hours from my home town Is this hell or Indianapolis with no way to get around Dale, like I said there isn't many places that song doesn't drop

  8. Zeroskilz says Rawk, I've never heard of the Bottle Rockets. I'll have to check them out. I'll try to ignore that they are comparing my fair city to Hell. :) Dale, preparing introduction now. Give it a few. I got lazy and am loading from the network instead of the server. It's slower this way.

  9. Iren says >> list what song best represents your home town<<< It would have to be The MC5 with American Ruse..... Hell the 5 split Ann Arbor 7 or 8 years before I was relocated there.... but just the line, in school they talk about freedom, but when you try to be free they won't let you welcome to my hometown.... the runner up would have to be California Uber Alles by The Dead Kenndey's.... by the way Deadbolt have a song called Going To Witchata that is pretty killer.

  10. Mike the Knife says "San Francisco Days" by Chris Isaak "San Franciscan Nights" by Eric Burdon and the Animals "If You're Going to San Fran..." Ah, forget it!

  11. Rawkkiddoh says Zero you should like them, minus the comparison. Iren, like it. Mike, you need something like Fake Tales of San Francisco by the Artic Monkeys. Great tune.

  12. Mike the Knife says Oh, I've got "Fake Tales...," Rawk. (Check the old MOG log.) But they're trumped by my real tales of San Francisco.

  14. Kid Charming says I don't have anything that mentions my hometown, exactly (which isn't surprising, since it's really more village-like), but Tom Waits seems to have a thing for Missouri in general.

  15. SamTheButcher says Well, there's not many (any?) about my birth town, but for the next town over I'll choose "Dizz Knee Land" by Dada. For my hometown I live in now, I'll choose "Things To Do In Denver When You're Dead" by Zevon.

  17. ivylander says Well, Elton John's "Philadelphia Freedom" is probably the least of the many songs that name-check Our Great Town. Probably the greatest is Chuck Berry's "Sweet Little Sixteen." Or maybe Martha and the Vandellas' "Dancing In The Streets." In fact, back in the days when the likes of Chuck Berry and Hank Snow ruled the earth, there was a real vogue for songs that named as many places as possible - probably a way of making sure the fanbase turned up when you did a cocnert in that city....
