Does anyone even watch MTV anymore?

Posted over 2 years ago
I recently had my cable company do a little upgrading to my service. One of the big improvements that they promised was the fact that I would have four different MTV stations. I laughed when I read that it would be an improvement, but I thought I would wait and see what MTV had to offer. So, here it is the day of the change and I get MTV, MTV 2, MTV 3, and MTV Latino. I have gone through the stations a few times today, and all they seem to be playing is the same crunked out music all day long. I began to think, does anyone over the age of 13 watch this garbage any more? I like to watch videos, and it seems that there are no real video stations out there any more. The last time I watched MTV religiously is when they used to have 120 Minutes on. Since then, I can't bring myself to turn it on. Is this the same dilemma for the rest of the viewing audience? Will I be forced to go to google and youtube to see the videos of the bands I like? I am just wondering if there are any good video stations left.

  2. chucky says I sometimes dvr the rock countdown they do, although I can't recall what the name of it is off the top of my head. Then on a Sunday morning I can watch the videos and fast forward through the ones I don't like.

  3. phantomtv says It’s the exact same thing up here in the great white north (CANADA) I just upgraded to the digital format and now I get 3 channels of MuchMusic that play the same crap that the basic MuchMusic does. Oh well the sound is better, It is all about the music, Right….

  4. Dale says Really? I didn't know there was an MTV3. It's unbelievable that they still cannot find two hours, in the midst of THREE channels, for 120 Minutes. And don't even give me the Subterranean song & dance, that is a pale imitation that is never on at a regular time. I'll take YouTube over that anyday.

  5. Rawkkiddoh says Phantomtv, I have always liked Music Plus, please tell me that has not changed. Chucky, thats what I mean about not playing much of anything. I remember when they used to play "blocks" of music, and different stuff as well. I have found Fuse to be pretty good, but they are falling into the same programing guide as MTV. Dale, I was unaware of MTV 3 as well, and its just like MTV...with a 3 after it. I was flipping through some channels just now, and wow I also get MTV Jams. Same stuff as the other 4.

  6. Rawkkiddoh says Crash, I know exaclty what you are talking about. Usually you also get excited to see which artists they got to say, "I want my MTV". Now, I cant remember the last time I had that channel on long enough to even watch a whole video.

  7. SatisfiedMind614 says 4??? Wow...so at any given time i could turn on the tv and see the road rules vs real world super death battle???? TRL killed the last shred of cool MTV had....do you have Sirius radio? Matt Pinfield hosts a show on Thursdays...i never miss it...he plays the raddest stuff!

  8. Pop Savant says I've even heard that TRL is on the chopping block because rating are 50%...Recent data from Nielsen media peg TRL’s viewership at 393,000, down from almost 600,000 in 2001. -GOOD RIDDANCE-

  9. greeninkstains says By the time I had MuchMusic and MuchMoreMusic, I wasn't interested in watching those channels anymore. At home, we now have MTV Canada and all that they seem to air is Date My Mom, Made and Room Raiders. At school with basic cable we get MusiquePlus and they seem to air a lot of subtitled Pimp My Car. Ouch. YouTube and the artist website are my favorite tools to find new videos and whatnot.

  10. DeeRS249 says yea so I don't know which cable service you have, but I have the dishNetwork and they have a channel called International Music Feed and ACTUALLY mean what the title says. they have different shows that will showcase music from different countries, giving you their top songs right now but then it also gives you waay awesome artists that are just underrated (ie Amy Winehouse if you still haven't heard of her). so yea, i pretty much keep my tv on this channel all day long. its channel 157, definitely find out if you get it.

  11. Dale says Here's the kicker: apparently, they have MTVU that actually plays decent music, but it's only shown at universities, because apparently college students are the only ones that care about good music. I will now slam my head into a desk until that decision makes sense.

  12. Iren says I don't get it, why hasn't some media company figured out, that they could make a bunch of money from doing what MTV used to do... play videos, have bands play live, and sell ad space... when I was a teen and in college it was a standing event to watch Headbangers Ball and 120 Minutes every weekend that we could! maybe that time has passed MP3 has killed the video, and youtube has so much stuff on it that you don't need to stay up to 1 am to see that Dead Can Dance video, when you have class at 9:30 am the next day..... but at the same time there was something about the structure and finding something that you wouldn't have found otherwise.... maybe the line should read Saw an MTV sticker on a Lexus, a little voice in side my head said you can't go back...

  13. SamTheButcher says Rawk, excuse me, but I am about to befoul this post. Please feel free to delete if it offends. However: Fuck mother fucking MTV. Those motherfuckers have NO GODDAM IDEA what the M in their own channel stands for. I just got DirecTV a couple of months ago and was pretty psyched to get MTV2, which used to be M2, and used to play videos, all kinds. THEY PLAY THE SAME GODDAM STUPID SHIT THAT MTV PLAYS. You speak of something on MTV called "videos". They don't play them anymore! And don't try to tell me they play them in the middle of the night. That's not playing videos, that's friggin' Pocket Fisherman hour. Those asshats couldn't find a video if it landed on their faces. One of the most prized brands in the world, with one of the most vaunted catalogs of music and video, and they flush it down the toilet with garbage like "My Super Sweet 16", a show about kids so spoiled, they have no sense of how ridiculous they look. VH1 still has some good stuff on. However. You wanna know where the good stuff is? Honestly? VH1 Classic. No lie. Fuse is okay, it's a little heavy on the ROCK, but hey, you might like that. 120 Minutes? Don't make me cry. I miss that show so much. Kevin Seal, where have you gone?

  14. amber says Not great but if you have FUSE, they still show videos, mostly alternative, emo, metal, some (rare) pop. They do have some cheesy shows but still, usually videos. Only place I see offering vids anymore

  19. chulsmith says yeah, what's the deal with all of those dating shows anyway? is it so the bulk of america can live vicariously through the college kids (or flava flav, i guess)? on a side note, i'm going to see public enemy for my first time in april and i hope that flav's TV bs doesn't bleed into their live show... anyway, i also miss the 120 minutes, headbanger's ball, and yo! mtv raps with my man fab 5 freddy (dre and lover just didn't cut it for me). now it's just a bunch of crap - but MTVU - i've heard good things about that station, too. i think they have a dedicated website... huh, what do you know? "http://www.mtvu.com/music/":http://www.mtvu.com/music/

  20. mktackabery says on the bandwagon, there is no M in MTV and it is the saddest thing except for VH1 and those damned "best of" shows where they have people talking about videos. OMG show the videos and SHUT UP. Sam: kudos, I think we should have MOG awards for best rant because I would vote for that one; in the words of pimpy, you RAWK.

Anyhow, I will disagree with Dale and say that Subterranean is worth using some space on the ole' DVR. Its not 120 Minutes but they get points for trying.

  24. Rawkkiddoh says I need to stop posting right before I go to bed. Wake up and this happens. Where do I begin..... Satisfied, glad to see that Matt Pinfield is doing a good radio show. I have seen him on some cable shows doing crap. That guy knows more about music, and I so miss his days as host of 120 minutes. Pop, I am afraid to think people actually miss Carson Daily. Green I always thought things were supposed to be cleaner in canada. I cry thinking the polution from the states has weakened your country. Please dont give up the fight. Dee, I will be flipping today to see if I am lucky enough to get that station. I had a video channel called the tube for a month. It was incredible, live performances with videos with no commercials. It reminded me of how MTV was when it started. That lasted a month and they are off air. Dale, I had heard of the station, maybe thats my reason to go back to college and get another degree. It would be like Rodney Dangerfield in Back to School. Iren, I think the Ataris will use that in their next album. Special hidden version of Boys of Summer. Sam, that will not be deleted. However in future rant posts I hear its more effective to do it all in caps. FUCK MTV! See grabs ya by the balls. Amber, I do like Stephens Untitled Rock Show. Interviews are decent, and you see non mainstream videos. Crash, I am waiting for some artist to do a remake of Money For Nothing just to get some MTV airplay. I could see Diddy doing it as a tribute to B.I.G. LadyC, I used to think the same of MTV2, but late night all they play is reruns of Made and Rob and Big. Subterranean was a great show, seems to have been lost in the shuffle. Mike, nice empty-v. made my morning. Mkta, dont even get me started on VH1. I remember the days where you would put that on to escape the crap on MTV. When I saw they had Booke Hoagan on heavy rotation, I knew their time had come. Scarlett, I am waiting for a MTV retro channel. Never will happen though. If it did, it would show all the old shows like Real World 1-234. Grady, I agree with Subterranean, I dont know if its even on anymore. Chul, I saved you for last. Why, because you are wrong about Dr. Dre and Ed Lover. Why you ask, simply put............

  28. Good Move says Subterranean is the only show worth watching on any of those so-called "music" channels. It has good guests and good videos. They mix in older videos with newer ones. And it only takes up an hour. I don't even see any videos on the original MTV anymore. It's all dating-type scenario shows or another Real World or a likened spinoff.

  31. Brett Schieber says MTV just makes me mostly sad. I love shows that have anything to do with music. However, those dating shows kill me. I know a recording engineer that has a little girl in elementary school. One afternoon while I was there, she was watching MTV and one of those dating shows was on. It was then that it hit me....those shows might be a guilty pleasure to watch at one time or another, but for little girls like that it's showing them that if they want a guy, they just have to act like a whore. In those shows, the biggest whore wins. I think that's really sad.

  34. Sweetbro says The husband watches a lot of MTV-U... it's slightly more palatable than regular MTV, though we only watch it at night when they actually show music videos. I miss the days when they actually showed the WHOLE video, only shows about music, and the Jon Stewart show... le sigh.

  35. watchbatteries says yes, I watch MTV-but in some sort of postmodern sardonic ironic way OR the fact that it's fun to watch with a gorup of friends at college and kinda pinpoint hw stereotypical everyone is( even though we had more fun discussing conjoined twins). As far as music goes, I used to help clean beach houses, and many times the owners had humongous cable packages, ccomplete with like 6 MTVs: MV,MTV2, MTV es, MTVX,MtV Hits, MTV Jams....it was fun, for a while. Isn;t MTV now MTV Tr3s? I don't really care about music videos, anyway.

  36. BrandNewSumthing says I'll admit that I watch The Real World. Mostly because I'm nostalgic for when it used to be cool. But that's about it. MTV doesn't play music anymore anyway. I've heard that MTVu has some pretty cool music sometimes (more indie) but you can only get it on college campuses and only if your college subscribes. I checked out Tube Music Network recently, I don't know if any of you have it... but they supposedly play nothing but videos. New ones, old ones, anything goes. Today I saw Billy Idol, Tom Petty, and Green Day. Not too bad.

  37. Rawkkiddoh says Brandnew, I had the tube for about a month, then they stopped showing it. I agree, that was quite the station, plus they showed tons of live videos which was nice. I have only watched the first Real World, and I still stand by that show as being good. Making the people actually work their real jobs was great. I know if some slutty 19 year old wanted to go hot tubbing, and I had to be at work the next day, she would be hot tubbing on her own. Watch, I tend to disagree, I still love videos, especially if done right

We pronouced it "loo-VWAH" Cracked our shit up. When the book came, we wrote "Return to Sender - No Such Name" Felt kinda guilty at that point, but just put on some tunes and did the Ed Lover Dance and all was well.
