WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Please play my song

Posted over 2 years ago
Concerts are a test of ones patience. Waiting for the actual day of, waiting in line, waiting for the openers to play, and then waiting for what seems like an eternity for your band to come on. It doesn't end there, oh no, because no matter what artist you have gone to see there is always one song in the back of your head that you have hoped they would play. One song that would completely make your night, and forever make that concert the best one you have ever seen. Sometimes it happens, and sometimes it does not. When you have waited an entire show for "your" song to come on, and it doesn't get played, it is kind of a let down. This last summer, I went to go see Against Me! play with Alkaline Trio. I knew the concert was going to be great, and I knew Alkaline Trio was playing the entire Goddammit album. I recently saw that NOFX would be doing the same thing during a few shows in California, and I wonder why more bands don't do this. I feel we all have a certain attachment to different albums by the same artist. The idea of going to a show to listen to the entire album of a band you love is brilliant. It was special to see the entire Goddammit album played, and I can only hope this catches on with in the music industry.

  1. NinjaSquirrel says Agree I saw Cursive at first ave and the whole time I was like "please play Driftwood: A Fairytale" and to no sucess I left underwhelmed. Same with Trail Of Dead at station 4, the whole time "play Summer Of 91'" and nothing. Great concerts though.

  2. Dale says Good post. So far, I've been quite lucky. The first time I saw the Cure, back in '96 in Denver, while enjoying the show very much, I had the thought in the back of my head, "Please play 'A Forest'!" It wasn't until the end of the second encore that they pulled it out, and I went nuts. The second time I saw them, at Curiosa in Chicago, I went with my best friend "Sam":http://mog.com/Gringoley. He hadn't seen them before. My favorite memory from the show was when they started "Close To Me" during the encore, and he looked over to me, and said "Oh my gosh! I can't believe they played it!" I knew just what he was feeling.

  4. lemontwist says Can't say I've ever really been disappointed. Sure, sometimes there's songs I'd like to hear, but I love going to concerts too much to get let down if they're not played.

  5. Anna says I have to say that I enjoy all that concert process, it's all excitement to me :) That aside, this has only happened to me twice, once with Madrugada & once with Juliette & The Licks.

  6. Nixne Svix says Clutch is great about playing whole albums or sides. Often without notice. I saw Monster Magnet perform Tab 25 in its 33 minute sledge to about 11 people at 2 in the afternoon, they were Vacuuming the backrooms the whole time, still awesome. To me its more about the song you love at the right time of the evening.....when you just need it to be heard , and bam! the song you love........

  7. chucky says I've seen Authority Zero 3 times in the past 2 years. They have never played the one song I want to hear. It's a bummer, but I still enjoyed the shows.

  8. Marta says HIM did not play 'Heartache Every Moment' when I saw them which I did not understand and depressed me no end (more people were wearing cKy tees than any other) Silverstein almost didn't play 'Bleeds No More' but did a second encore (I only went to hear that song - oh and to pick up a guy but that was not the point)

  9. Rawkkiddoh says Yeah, I think my all time what, they did not play it concert was when I saw the Cure. I wanted so badly to hear Love Cats live, and it never happened. I do not think they have come back to minneapolis since.

  10. Marta says i think the worst part of it is that you fork out alot of money for some of these concerts and sometimes they don't play the songs they're best known for because "they are sick of playing them" or something... Best value for money is Chris Isaak - I think he played everything he's ever done (the concert went that long! Just Awesome)

  11. Rawkkiddoh says I agree with that, and the artists should really look at whats keeping them popular. My best bet for a good concert has always been NOFX. They will play the songs you want to hear, and now they are playing entire albums for their fans. I only wish I lived in LA so I could see the entire So Long and Thanks For All the Shoes album.

  12. Marta says That is an excellent idea... you've just got to catch them at the right album for you. Unless I'm mistaken, I thought road trips to concerts were all the rage in America?

  13. Rawkkiddoh says yeah, but minnesota to cali is more than a road trip, its a plane trip

  14. Marta says I wouldn't have a clue obviously... I’m so naive I couldn't even figure out what MN stood for!

  16. mktackabery says well i can understand from their perspective; it;s gotta be nigh impossible to keep the song fresh from their end night after night after night after night.

  17. ShawnaMarie89 says When I saw Muse, they played their whole newest album, in order even. They played a few old favorites as well, although, unfortunately, they didn't play New Born. But, I can't complain one bit because they did hit all of my (and likely everyone else's) other favorites. The idea of it is pretty neat, though. After an older album has been pushed aside by one or more newer ones, it's always great to hear the old songs again, when the hype of the new one dies down. I think it'd be great for artists to start playing more rare songs, as well. The ones from the EP's and covers and stuff. Those are always fun!

  18. Rawkkiddoh says Shawna, nothing beats a good cover in the middle of a set. Rare songs are great especially if one of them is your favorite. On the flip side, mkta is dead on, I am sure some bands find it hard to play the same song night after night. However, if its what fans came to see, I sometimes feel they owe me the right.
