WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

The art of the poster

Posted over 3 years ago
A while back I began to notice that poster art is making a comeback here in Minnesota. When going to my favorite record stores, I would notice certain upcoming shows flyers standing out from the rest. I began to collect them, and was amazed as to how good they look hanging in a nice frame. I started to look into the whole culture, and was amazed at some of the artwork that has gone into these posters. Artists like Coop and Tara McPherson got their start doing poster art, and now they are world renowned. I feel their is nothing like looking forward to a good show, and then seeing one of these prints that you are able to nab to hang on your wall. I have even found myself at a show of a band I have not really heard that much about, just because the poster for it was that good. I recently came across the book The Art of Modern Rock, and asked for it for Christmas. I got the book and it is incredible. If you are looking for a great book to relive all the concerts you wished you had go to, this is the one. You can check it out here at http://www.artofmodernrock.com/ I uploaded a poster of one of my favorite local artists; it was one of those shows I did not know much about, but went anyways. If you have any web sites or pictures of similar posters, I would love to see them.

  4. fistula spume says God I love show poster art. I like album cover art too but really nicely screenprinted poster art is something on it's own. Even if it's some photocopied crummy punk one with awful drawing. I love it. Have you been to "gigposters":http://www.gigposters.com/? They've got a bunch there. Coop and Kozik have to be two of my favorites. I would kill to be able to do stuff like that. That Droids Attack poster rules. It makes me want to invest in equipment for silkscreening.

  5. superjaimee says i have been collecting poster art for the past couple of years and am amazed at how much it has grown in value, both artistically and monetarily. there is a great site/community: gigposters.com that will give y'all some insights on what's hot, and what poster art nerds are talking about. i'll start mogging some of my collection; the framed stuff anyway.

  6. Rawkkiddoh says Thanks for all the ideas folks. Nixne, I have gone through a few of the links, and I am in heaven. Fistula, I agree with you Coop and Kozik are awesome. I got even more into their work once I started collecting Vinyl toys from Kidrobot. I am a dunny freak. Super, I would love to see what you have so far. I have a total of 7 framed works in my house, plus an original Obey poster, signed by Fairey himself. Nothing is better than a good rock poster. I would say my favorite is the limited edition Seeing Double At the Triple Rock poster I got for being in the video. Every time I see it, it makes me smile.

  9. Kwinnton says On something of a different note - what record stores would you recommend visiting in the STP/MLPS area? I'm out in the suburbs and haven't lived in MN for that long and would like to check out some local stores.

  10. Rawkkiddoh says You gotta go to Cheepo Records, best one is in Uptown. Extreme Noise Records if you are looking for punk/hardcore stuff. Electric Fetus has an incredible selection of everything. Fifth Element if you are looking for Hip-Hop.

  11. chulsmith says what?! i get no credit for giving you the nofx poster?! i had to talk one of the guys into getting me one after they stopped handing them out and had to LIE to him saying that i never got one. like justin timberlake says 'where is the love?' ;)

  12. Rawkkiddoh says Chul, you get the credit. I didnt want it to get out that I left early, but it happened. After standing in one spot all day, I left before I could get my poster, Chul was the man that snared me a poster, I still owe him big time for this.

  13. chulsmith says yeah, and you missed the best part - nofx playing the free live show to about 50 people. and they played the decline, too.
