Commercial Songs

Posted over 2 years ago
I was thinking, how some comercials seem even better if they have a good song to go along with them. An example of this would be the Ipod commercials. The commercials seem more fun to watch if there is a great song playing in the backround. There have even been some bands I have frantically searched for after seeing a commercial air on tv. My question is, what do you feel is the best use of a song in a commercial. Part of me wants to say when Electronic Arts used the Old 97's "Question" in their ad for Madden. Then I thought back to a Levi's ad from the 90's using Soft Cell's "Tainted Love". This one takes the cake.

  1. Samantha Seldon says I really like the commercial with Gary Jules's "Mad World" in the background. I'd never heard that song before and after seeing the commercial repeatedly I sought out the song and downloaded it. As much as people gripe about artists "selling out" it works out well sometimes. Also I believe the 2.4 seconds of a 2006 Winter Olympics commercial that played We Are Scientists made the games even more fantastic.

  2. chucky says The only time I have bought an album based off a song I'd heard in a commercial was when I heard Bill Wither's "Lovely Day" in a Gap ad a few years ago.

  4. SatisfiedMind614 says I agree with Samantha...to see that song in such a cool video game commercial really worked...oh, and I oh a non-music note I was happy to see a new Geico Caveman commercial this weekend, with the Caveman in therapy! That guy needs to win some sort of Commercial life time achievement award!

  5. rweyh04 says Captain Morgan's commercial, I don't know the name of the song but it goes, "You, You never believe me." I looked for that song for over an hour and once I heard it that was the only part that was good, but it worked amazingly in the commercial.

  7. Rawkkiddoh says I agree, the Geico commercials are killer Satisfied. As for purchasing a album or song because of a commercial, that Da, da, da song in a VW ad drove me nuts. I felt, for some odd reason, I had to own it.

  8. indierocksnob says i know my mouth dropped when i heard Hem in the Liberty Mutual Commercial. granted, the general population isn't familiar with it, but it added to the statement they were trying to make, however cheesy. (plus, i was excited that the tv got a song stuck in my head that was actually GOOD)

  10. ookpik says My favourite is when commercials use completely inappropriate songs but edit them to fake it. E.g., - that "McDonald's commercial with New Slang by The Shins":http://www.beer.com/beer.com-Content_C-section_id-1126642894738_interview.html, that cut out before the line about sand in your fries. - I once saw an ad for insurance that used the pretty instrumental opening to a Jim O'Rourke song, which consists mainly of 6 minutes of repeating, "Women of the world, take over, 'cause if you don't the world will come to an end, and it won't take long." Subliminal? At least they didn't use "Halfway to a Threeway," I guess. - I saw an ad for a newspaper-- the Globe and Mail I think-- that used an RJD2 clip to sound more urban or whatever... but the song is called Ghostwriter, and it struck me as a weird choice for an ad about waking up to original writing and important opinions.

  11. Rawkkiddoh says My favorite like that is the use of the Transplants song, DJ DJ for a hair shampoo commercial. I still wonder how they got the rights to that.
