WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Why music lovers get the shaft at Christmas time

Posted about 1 year ago

I have not always been into music as much as I am right now. In fact, there was time when I would be happy just listening to Casey Kasem's Top 40 Countdown and would more than likely have known the lyrics to 90% of the songs on it. Then I grew up and learned that there is a lot more music out there than is found on the radio.

Why is this bad you ask? Well, at least for me it has been years since I have gotten music as a gift at Christmas time. In fact as the holidays roll by it seems the gift of music is something people do not feel I need. My mother tells me, "You have enough cd's already, I am not going to add to your collection." My friends tell me, "You have so much already, I have no idea what to get you and if I did you problably would not like it."

In fact it had been years since I got the gift of music and the only reason I seem to get it these days is because of the lovely folks here on MOG. I do not think I am that hard to shop for, in fact I always include a list of music I would like on both my Christmas and birthday lists each year, still no music is sent my way at all.

Tonight after I got done journalling I went into my collection to find the last album I received as a Christmas gift. I looked through every cd I had, and then I came across the last album I can remember getting as a Christmas gift from my family. It happened to be Paul Simon's Graceland and when I looked up when it came out my jaw nearly dropped. 20 years ago is when that album came out, and since then my stocking has remained empty from the people I call my family.

I guess I am wondering, am I the only one this happens to? Are there others here on MOG who seem to get the shaft when it comes to receiving music from their families? Maybe I am just ranting, maybe I am just tired and should go to bed. Before I go I will give you this, a video from a time when Chevy Chase was still funny and a time when I still got music as a Christmas gift.

I never ask for music for holidays, really. My digital music collection is big enough, though.

I prefer not getting music as gifts as I'd rather choose my own thank you very much. No one I know in real life would really have a clue as to what to get me anyway!

My wife used to give me the "I don't know what to get you" spiel, but then again, she may be on to something. The last time she bought me a CD, it was REM's Up. Bleech.

OK.  I'm totally in the same boat as you, however, I have gotten an iTunes gift card a time or two over the past 5 years.  The last CD I got?  Vince Guarreuli (you can tell I really could give a shit about it) and his Charlie Brown Christmas.  The sad thing is, I already had it!

My husband trys to get me CDs and he usually fails horribly.  Either its something I don't like, something he thinks I should like (and is off base) or its something I already have.  Gift certificates or gift cards would be adored but rarely come my way.

I, however, ALWAYS give the gift of music to my family and loved ones.  My coworkers get a mix every Christmas and I am (I think) pretty good at matching up my top-20 listening recipients with something a little less ordinary...or at least I try.

I got music one time for christmas, and it was from my brother in law (who has good tastes) and I had actually written out a list of things I wanted.

I used to buy my family CD's in the early 90's but as nieces and nephews arrived, I moved away from it as I figured my brothers did not have large amounts of time to listen to music. As a teenager, I frequently got music as gifts from one of my brothers but that's about 25 years ago.

In recent years, I've gotten iTunes gift certificates but I mostly use those for purchasing episodes of Battlestar Galactica and Weeds as I like to buy music on CDs and rip them myself. I am sucker for liner notes - it's not the same without them.

Did you make this post so that we would all start sending you CDs? ahahhaha ;)

I've gotten CDs for Christmas. It's actually an easy choice for me, people can easily buy me one, make me happy and be done with it ;o)

This is absolutely true! I've cannot recall a single CD I recieved for Christmas that is even in my top 100.

But I guess there's some logic at work, too. I already have all the stuff I like, so somebody would have to really nail down a longshot to break the string.

    Interesting....

I keep most of my Want List on Amazon, which made it easy for people. Now, however, the list is so large that when people buy me stuff off of it I think to myself "Well THAT wouldn't have been my first choice..". Yeah, I'm a lousy gift recipient. I told everyone NOT to buy me music for Christmas. I'm almost caught up on listening to unheard purchases and rubbing my hands in glee with the idea of buying new music and getting to hear it right away (as opposed to putting it at the end of the queue).

I have to answer this 2 ways.

First- nobody could really buy me Cds as they would (almost) never get it right. So I get that- completely.

My wife tried- she got me Paul McCartney's Fireman CD for Hanukkah. A valiant effort but I'd never get it for myself. McCartney's outtake stuff? I don't think so.

But I do appreciate the thought and effort. I got her the Jack Johnson CD because she just heard some of his songs and loved them. I swallowed hard, winced and bought it for her- because it was for HER, not me (hey, nothing wrong with him, just not to my taste), and I knew she would like it. She was elated- so it was worth it.

The want list on Amazon is a very good idea.

Friends are taking me to see Graham Parker at a small club for my birthday, though. Seats in row 2!

    Now THAT works!!!

    Happy Holidays, everyone!
