THE MUSIC BLOGGING HIVE MIND

Sometimes I think why even bother?

Posted 12 months ago

The days seem to come and go like they never took place to begin with. Things begin to seem routine, as if my life is guided by one gigantic schedule. Wake up, go to work, come home, and make dinner. What limited free time I have seems to be controlled by my job, and that means I am correcting papers or doing lesson planning. I sometimes feel like why even bother waking up? Why even go into work? I wonder sometimes where are the things that are supposed to be done for me. I guess sometimes I feel like I spend all my days taking care of others and that can be tiring. When I am at school, I have a classroom full of kids who look to me for an education. When I am at home I have a wife and child who look to me to give them the things in life they need to be happy. Whether that may be a hot meal, a clean house, or just a father who is happy...........well like I said sometimes it just takes its toll on you.

Then, out of nowhere a song can hit you and change how you feel about everything. That happened to me today, and I really did not expect it when it happened. Yesterday, on my way to Toys R Us I stopped at Starbucks to get myself a cup of coffee before going to buy my godchild a birthday present. While waiting I was browsing through the cd's there and I know this story sounds familiar. It seems whenever I am in Starbucks I feel the need to go through their music although most often I do not buy anything to take home. Yesterday was different, they had a cd titled "Have You Heard?" It contained 16 songs by a lot of artists I indeed had never heard of. On a whim I bought it, and have been listening to it over the course of the weekend.

I was on my way to Cub Foods to get groceries for the week, and then the song came on. I don't know if it was because it reminded me of a Sunday at first, or if it was because the lyrics held a deeper meaning to me. I know I loved how simple it began, and then the full band joining in at the end pretty much took the cake for me. As I see it, it is a song that sounds like Sunday going away and Monday entering with out asking permission. Enjoy it mog, and even if it is a band I am late to love, I have to say I think I have a new favorite to begin listening to.

I remember not so long ago when you were complaining about NOT having a job, lol. But the doldrums of everyday tends to get to ya after awhile.

I recognize the photos of the guy in the vid, so I know someone posted about this band or at least the guy solo. Have to say the song doesn't do much for me sorry to say. Different strokes, ya know.

Is that photo actual?  As in, there's that much snow on the ground right now?  'cause if so, we live in different worlds, my friend.  I was out in shorts today.  It was slightly chilly, but still not too chilly for shorts and sandals.

Why is it that I thought you were a single parent?

I think I speak for most people on here when I say that I wish you wouldn't feel that way about life, although I know at times from my own experiences that it's hard not to. I wish I had a teacher like you when I was growing up and I'm positive that years from now many of your students will look back and remember you as being one kick ass teacher. They may not tell you or even show you but I'm sure many of those students have a hell of a lot of respect for their Mr. Cooper.

One day, years from now, when you're still doing this routine, asking the same questions you'll bump into an old student of yours and they'll tell you just how much you meant to them and how much they learned from you and how much you inspired them even when they were no longer in your classroom. It may take a while but when it happens then maybe you'll realize how important it is that you choose to wake up in the morning and continue to be the person that you are, doing the things that you do.

Great song by the way, maybe I should start hanging out at Starbucks for a little inspiration.

My son introduced me to the music of Dallas Green (city and colour) late last year.  It was truly love at first listen.  His current cd, Bring me your love, is incredible ... but his last cd, Sometimes, is also incredible.  His music has (literally) helped heal me through the deaths of so many people in my life this year ... I consider his music to be therapy.

He is truly a great find ... I'm glad you went to Starbucks!!

oh yeah ... teachers ROCK!!!   :)

I can relate to your feeling the way you do.  The weekends are far off and when there are weekends, they usually entail some sort of catching up on must do's from the lost weekdays.  It's not often that people will expose how monotonous life can be at times.  Right now, my life and my wife's life is filled with caring for a baby who needs to be fed every 3 hours or so.  And when he's not being fed, he usually need attention.  It's a 24 hour a day cycle with few breaks for anything else.  I guess life becomes a selfless flurry of actions when you have a kid, especially when you're the supporter.

I guess that's where music comes into play.  Music will break the monotony and it's what keeps me going.  It sounds so cliche but in essence, playing a variety of non-monotonous music gets me through.

Kevin, like I've told you before in the past, you should pamper yourself in anyway you can. You are a delightful man, and you more than deserve it. Kick the monotony in the balls, otherwise it will swallow you. I'm currently trying to do the same with my frustration and occasional loneliness.

I have no doubt that you are a wonderful teacher, husband, and father. Now get on with the pampering!

And, once again, Starbuck's saves a life.

Teaching, parenting, and husbanding.  The three most important, yet most thankless jobs in the world.  Either you've got a really good heart...or you just love pain.  Funny how those two things go together.

Here's to ya though, kid.  Making the world a better place and all that. :)

Nice.  Bittersweet and beautiful.  Right up my alley these days.  Thank you for the song and doing what you do.  I read your M blog, and I don't know how you do it, but keep doing it.

Yeah, I often wonder how many people around the globe are masturbating simultaneously with me.  Kinda makes me feel like I'm one with the world.

Boy, do I know what it's like to feel like you owe every minute of your life to everyone else. But the great antidote to self-pity is to remember the emptiness of not owing anything to anyone....
