OMG

yup, that's my dad

This morning I did something I do not usually do on a Sunday and that was make the 40 minute trip over to my parents for breakfast. Sundays usually mean time spent in my pajamas around the house doing as little as possible. Seeing that I am the only one in my house right now, my mom felt it would be good to have an old fashioned big morning breakfast at their house. This used to be a staple in my life when I was young and living at home. Sunday mornings meant waking up to the smell of breakfast, and it was always good because of my mom's cooking.

I got in my car with music to listen to and stopped on my way over for a cup of coffee. There is something to be said about driving in the early morning with nothing to do but listen to music and look at a city as it wakes up from the night before.

The breakfast was incredible as always, and I spent some time sitting with my parents talking away about this and that. It was great, I guess you could almost say it was like a scene from a move with us sitting out on their porch, watching the various forms of wildlife come out to see what we were doing. I did need to get home however, I had some more lesson planning to do and I wanted to get it done before my wife and son came home from their vacation. It had been 10 days since I had seen them, and I really did not want to have to worry about work once they were home. I said my goodbyes and was heading back home for the day. I knew I had some time to spare, and I knew one of my favorite record stores was right on the way home so I decided to make a pit stop on the way.

I have said it before about the Electric Fetus but I will say it again. This has to be one of the best record stores in the Twin Cities. I go here to find albums that you would not be able to find anywhere else and I feel it is one of the few places you can go and actually find good help when looking for a record to purchase.

First thing I saw upon entering the store was that I missed an in store performance by Billy Bob Thorton the night before. If I had know I most likely would have gone, but I did not take too much time to kick myself in the ass about it. Instead I hit the stacks and began to browse as I like to do when in this store. I was going through the discount bin when I saw a record by Leon Redbone, and immediately thought of my dad who I was talking to just an hour before. My dad loves Leon Redbone, and I used to think he was the only one who actually enjoyed his music. This was when I was a lot younger and my musical tastes were not as varied as they are now. I looked at the price and thought for $2.99 I could not pass it up.

I continued to look around the store, but in reality I just wanted to get home. I was excited about seeing my son again and did not want to not be home when he got there. So, with one Leon Redbone album in hand I headed back to my car and listened to it for the rest of my drive. I can't think of better music to listen to while on a Sunday morning drive, and the entire time I whistled along with the music that was playing. It made me think of my father, and how for once he would have enjoyed the music being played on my in car radio.

So, my addition to the Sunday under the covers play list is indeed Leon Redbone. Here he is doing a cover of the song, Please Don't Talk About Me When I'm Gone. Yeah, I feel Mr. Redbone sounds pretty good on a Sunday morning.

I became a huge Leon fan when I saw him live. If he ever comes to your neck of the woods run, do not walk, for tickets. I bought a few CDs but stopped after a few. Live is better.

Reminds me of spending the night at my grandparents as a kid and getting up to the smell of coffee, bacon and french toast in the mornings.  Those were some of the best breakfasts I've ever had.  Thanks for sharing.  :)

Saturday mornings were the big breakfast mornings when I was growing up since we were church going folks on Sunday(ACK! no more, no more!). Sounds like a great time Kev.

Never been much into Leon, just not my style I guess. Loads of talent, of course. Like hearing a song or two of his every once in a blue moon though.

It's not his voice, since I love me some gravelly, gutteral voices, it's the style of music I can only take in small amounts.

And I lived at home until I was 25(minus the 4 years at college of course) & was SO glad to finally be free when I got my first apt!

I absolutely love Leon Redbone.  Excellent find.  His records never seem to be so common lately.  I've got three records that were my parents.  When I was a kid I always mixed him up with Father Guido Sarducci and Panama Jack.  I love the Champagne Charlie album with that Please Don't Talk About Me When I'm gone track.  He has some other goodies too.  He's a mystery.  No one knows for sure what his name is, where he was born, or how old he is.  I'd like to see him before he goes to loveable rogue heaven.

fistula, he is great and so timeless that I think its a crime in some states not to own at least one record

It should be a crime.  It should also be a crime if you only know him as the "Fresh Step Clorox" guy.  Mmm.  Bleach never smelled (or sounded) so good.
