WE DO THE MASHED POTATO AND THE FUNKY CHICKEN

Different kind of Friday post

Posted about 1 year ago

It has been warm here in Minnesota as of late, and warm weather makes me slow down. I went out for a run yesterday and found myself feeling rather miserable. Temperatures were close to 90, but here in Minnesota it is the humidity that kills you. Near the end of my run Bedouin Soundclash came on my ipod and everything just kind of felt better.

It seems there has been a lot of posts on MOG about DUB and reggae, so I thought I would throw this song in with the mix. Bedouin Soundclash takes its name from a dub record by an artist named Badawi, released on ROIR records in 1996. In an early practice, Malinowski exclaimed it sounded like Bedouin Soundclash, and the name was adopted. In 2006 the band began plans for its own imprint 'Pirates Blend' which will release their own side projects and b-sides. The first two projects to be released are set to be a Vernon Maytone solo project, and a Bad Brains mash-up, whose release is yet to be determined.

The song I heard seemed to make me drift away to a better place and after a 7 mile trek that is always a good feeling. A side note here for any tech savy runners, I tried out my new nikeplus arm band. If you like to run/walk and have an ipod nano I would strongly suggest getting this little device.

The Nike+iPod Sports Kit is a device which measures and records the distance and pace of a walk or run. The Nike+iPod consists of a small accelerometer attached to or embedded in a shoe, which communicates with either the Nike+ Sportband or a receiver plugged into an iPod nano. If using the iPod, iTunes software can be used to view the walk or run history. Added bonus here, if you head over to itunes you can download workout music titled Original Runs. Artists like Aesop Rock, the Hives and others have composed original music that was designed to assist you in your workouts. After a run, the receiver can be plugged straight into a USB port and the software will upload the run information automatically to the Nike+ website.

I am sure I am one of a few here on MOG who think going out for a 7 mile run is fun, but I thought I would put this out there in case people were interested.
Oh, and that song I was talking about............well here is the video. I wish you all a great Friday and cheers to another weekend!

As a certified gadget girl...I am all about geeky stuff that gets you up and going.  That's the kind of motivation that I would need.  I haven't met anyone that actually had the shoe/nano thing, so I was interested to hear about it.

I can't play yellow buttons at work...but I like the video.  It's not exactly what I would consider pump you up exercise music, but beautiful none the less.

thanks lak, I am guessing they are working on something with bikes as well

and annie, the way I was feeling towards the end of my run warrented the slower music. I was not sure how well it would work, but it is incredible how accurate it is. Added bonus is having your own site at nike.com where is keeps a journal of all your run/walks.

7 mile run at 90 degrees ... umm, no thankyou..... now if you want to help me move and stack 4 cords of wood.. well then that'll be some good exercise too ...

No thanks.  I'm fine being a fat, lazy American, thank you. :)

But 7 miles?!!?  Apparently, you're trying to go straight from the fat suit to the trauma ward. :)

Wait a minute!  You can't be fat.  You play soccer.  You're just one of those fucking over-achievers that make the rest of us look bad.

    Asshole!

a cord is a pile of wood that when stacked should measure 4'x4'x8' ..... needless to say 4 cords makes a ver large pile of wood in my yard .... it's my main source of heat for the winter.

I, for one, think that Nike+ dohickey sounds cooooool.  I have one of the old Garmin things that records the pace/distance/heartrate during a run but to attach that to music is perfection for people like us.

However, I don't like Nike shoes...can you use another shoe and attach the receiver to it?

Troy - I used to be a bit more trim then my son came along and I have not run in 2 years. Gotta get back into shape before the rest of me goes

Dzendvokh - that would be a work out, moved wood before when I helped my dad remove trees from their yard and I was sore all over.

Anna - how can you be fat with all that hip hop booty shaking you do?

Amber alas you can not. I had not bought Nike in some time and the pair I got have been incredible. It would be worth it to check out the new line just for the nikeplus. It is fun to upload it onto your site, and it shows how you are doing with your training

Nike shoes are always too narrow for my wide-assed clodhoppers.  Eventually, maybe they will make a knock-off that I can use with my New Balance...

Amber - I was the same way, I have the flattest feet around. I wore New Balance up until this last year and when I was asking about running shoes the guy asked if I had ever gotten nikes in wide. I didnt know it but they make their shoes normal, and in wide sizes. The shoes I got feel as good if not better than any new balance I had ever run in

Anna- long time ago, but they still have clips of you on youtube

note: the black wig is not fooling anyone

Troy - I agree, but after watching anna I might have to review my decision

Okay, you guys had a nice little discussion going on here about exercise and stuff, and then someone had to go and start talking about condoms and herpes and crap.  I mean, WTF?

From your description I was expecting a bit more of a dub thing to happen in that clip.  Still, it was a'ight.  Not quite 100% my thing, but I could sit back and enjoy it.

As far as exercise goes, 'cause I'm going to try to get this conversation back to a decent, healthy place, I think anyone who considers running to be fun needs to be examined professionally, but that's just my opinion.  I used to have a thing for a girl who ran about 5 miles a day and a half marathon at least once a week. Looking back now, I'm not always sure what I was thinking.  I'm working on being more active, but running?  No, thanks.  I did spend all day at the beach, though, and it was a perfect day for it--water the perfect temperature, surf not very rough, it was a great day.

I'd consider buying those shoes, just to have them, but I'm sure they break my self-imposed rule of no more than $20 for a pair of shoes.  I'm such a cheapskate!!

Troy - Let that one rest right there. I told you too much, but lets just say I am safe

Sam - I have always wanted to make that trip, I think I could spend hours wandering with no agenda what so ever

Groon - It is all troy's fault believe me. This song was a lot more laid back than what they normally do. Try this one on for size

As for the running, well I find it such a stress release its incredible. I have been doing it since the 9th grade and have 8 marathons under my belt. Nothing beats heading out with music to just sweat, then again I think thats just me sometimes

Yeah, I'm digging that track a bit more.  The whole reggae/dub thing is new to me, but I'm starting to really like what I'm hearing.

While I can't understand the running thing, I can understand where you're coming from.  We all have our way of "centering" ourself, for lack of a better term.  For me, it's just being alone (a fact that drives my completely opposite wife crazy).  Today, for example, at the beach: I was kind of in a pissy mood all day, but I took about ten minutes to myself, just swam out farther than anyone else (the tide was all the way out at the time, so it was pretty far out, really), and just stared at the empty ocean for a while.  When I swam back later I felt like a completely different person.  I just needed that time.

Kevin...maybe I'll check them out then.  Sounds like we have similar feet, although I hope your toenails aren't painted the same CFM red.  Heaven's knows I could use a boost that a new pair of shoes can give.  :)

As for running...I've never counted myself as a runner but a couple of years ago my husband told me he didn't think I had it in me to do a 1/2 marathon.  I started training the next day and there was nothing EVER like the feeling when I was waiting for the start of the race.

I need to get back to that.  It was amazing.  :)

August - the sore knees will kill you. Have had many a friends who that happened to.

Amber - little update here.......this new found "toy" I have gotten has made me want to run just about every day. I really can not remember the last time I have sat through out the day and wondered, "When can I get my next run in." I get home, plug the sensor into my computer and watch my run upload onto the nike site. Plus, I see how I am doing with the challenges I have set for myself in regards to the other runners who have joined them. The shoes still feel great as well, and yes we do have the same sort of feet. Mine are flat, wide and devoid of any nail polish although I have been thinking about giving them a little treat!

indie - If you get a chance try em out, they have put a fire under my butt about going out for runs and nothing is better than plugging the chip into the USB port and seeing my run before my eyes. Its even better if you get the hook up with the Nano, shows all your stats right on your Ipod.

I've never been a fan of Nike shoes as they just don't ever seem comfortable.  I'm a NB man, myself.  I too have fallen out with running and I love to run.  This is an inspiring post though.  I will have to try those shoes, as I need a new pair anyway and I happen to have a nano!

Good tunes, by the way, even though the only one that works is the vid you posted in comments.
