I think we would all like this.........part 2

Posted over 3 years ago

About a year ago I posted a song, one that I heard and thought it was the picture perfect idea of how a relationship should be. The song was Impossible Things #2 by Looper, and it is a song that I love listening to quite a bit. I like songs that tell stories, ones you can fall into and wish that it was you the singer was talking about. Even better are songs that talk about relationships, and I am not sure why that is. I do know that every so often a song hits my speakers and I can not do anything but sit back and hit rewind as many times as I possibly can.

Last night I had such a moment, and it came at such an odd time. I was finishing up on my computer and had remembered that I got some cd's from my local library. Normally I would have waited to listen to them until the next morning, it was late and I was getting over a pretty bad migraine headache. I remembered one of the cd's I had picked up, and just the title of it made me head upstairs to bring it down to listen to. The cd was A Date With John Waters, and I wanted to hear what that it had to offer. The cd itself is a collection of songs Waters finds romantic, and after seeing many of his films I thought it would be interesting to hear someone elses take on romantic music.

As I went through the songs it became evident that the two of us would never hit it off. I liked the songs on the cd, but none of them screamed to me of being that romantic. Then it happened, this song came on and I began to hit rewind over and over. The song was In Spite Of Ourselves by John Prine, and it made me just sit and listen over and over. It is simple, and makes me think of a couple sitting on a porch swing in the hot afternoon sun singing to eachother while thinking of the past. Yeah, this song did it to me last night, and I am sure it will be getting some airtime through out my day.

Here is the song with the lyrics to boot, god I love things like this.

Lyrics -

She don't like her eggs all runny
She thinks crossin' her legs is funny
She looks down her nose at money
She gets it on like the Easter Bunny
She's my baby I'm her honey
I'm never gonna let her go

He ain't got laid in a month of Sundays
I caught him once and he was sniffin' my undies
He ain't too sharp but he gets things done
Drinks his beer like it's oxygen
He's my baby
And I'm his honey
Never gonna let him go

In spite of ourselves
We'll end up a'sittin' on a rainbow
Against all odds
Honey, we're the big door prize
We're gonna spite our noses
Right off of our faces
There won't be nothin' but big old hearts
Dancin' in our eyes.

She thinks all my jokes are corny
Convict movies make her horny
She likes ketchup on her scrambled eggs
Swears like a sailor when shaves her legs
She takes a lickin'
And keeps on tickin'
I'm never gonna let her go.

He's got more balls than a big brass monkey
He's a wacked out werido and a lovebug junkie
Sly as a fox and crazy as a loon
Payday comes and he's howlin' at the moon
He's my baby I don't mean maybe
Never gonna let him go

In spite of ourselves
We'll end up a'sittin' on a rainbow
Against all odds
Honey, we're the big door prize
We're gonna spite our noses
Right off of our faces
There won't be nothin' but big old hearts
Dancin' in our eyes.
There won't be nothin' but big old hearts
Dancin' in our eyes.

Loved it.  I have "Bruised Orange" which I have listened to a couple times and liked, but listening to this, makes me realise I don't know his stuff well enough.  Gonna try and find it and give it a spin.  Thanks!

Love the lyrics, tff! Not wild about the music or her twangy voice. I know Prine is a icon but fuck that, never been wild about his music.

Trust me, I DID! Loving that album so much, it sounds so modern. They could've put that out this year & it'd be a hit.

Btw, I'm curious to know what the other tracks are on the Waters collection. He's so wonderfully twisted that I'm dying to know what he thinks is romantic.
