WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

A punk Springsteen?

Posted about 1 year ago

Quite often you hear the hype of a band well before actually hearing what they have to offer. The hype surrounding the new album from the Gaslight Anthem record gotten to be rather big. So big in fact that pre-sales of their new record, The 59' Sound crashed Side One Dummy's once it was made availible for pre-order. There has been numerous comparisons made to that of Bruce Springsteen, but not because of the musical aspect of the record. Springsteen made his name by writing everyman songs and simple poetry that break down class barriers. He may be rich beyond belief now, but he has a working man's heart. Sure, he's become too much of an adult artist and it's been years since he's made an album worthy of the name he established 30 years ago, but that's all the better reason for the Gaslight Anthem re-energize his legacy.

The 59' Sound is a punk rock record, but like Against Me! they combine traces of rockabilly and Americana with in their songs. With The '59 Sound, the Gaslight Anthem will open two doors: They will open punk rock up to Springsteen in a way that is free of adult-oriented, arena-playing rock stardom. They will also open up a new channel for those Springsteen fans interested in more than just nostalgia. Be looking for this record to do well, the first single off of it has been getting a lot of play time on my radio at home.

That's got a nice rootsy feel to it, plus it would definitely induce much pogoing about. Evidently I'm not in the right place to hear their hype, until now.

Dale, it seems to be a slow rolling snowball but I am really liking their sound. I had not heard of them until I read about the shut down of their record labels web site. Went out and got their first album the next day and am loving them quite a bit

Dig the Boss. Heard a lot about these guys, but haven't actually heard em. One album and already drawing comparisons to a rock legend, I will have to check em out.

The lead singer reminds me more of the lead singer of The Killers than Springsteen but then again The Killers drew comparisons to Bruce on their last album too. Liking this, thanks Kev.

Hey Kevin - I was about to post about this band but searched their profile first to see what they were about.  I have never heard them (until just now).  I just got an e-mail from Vintage Vinyl in NJ and the owner, Rob Roth pretty much name dropped to two acts you had mentioned which I found interesting.  Definitely something to check out!

"The breakout band of 2008 will be Gaslight Anthem. I've just finished listening to my advance of “the 59 Sound”, I am blown away!!  Gaslight Anthem captures the rockin' roots of Bruce Springsteen's New Jersey sound, and the fury of Against Me.  What more can you ask of a rock band?"

I'm somewhat undecided, but I'm leaning more towards "I like it".  I'll have to check out some of their other stuff.  Thanks!
