Got in a bit ago from another scorcher here in Minnesota. Started off the morning with a 9-2 victory in soccer, had a stellar game in net if I dont say so myself. From there I headed out to a graduation party, I guess it is one of the perks of being a teacher and those perks are few. My family and I were on our way home when I remembered something a co-worker had told me. He told me that Kohls was now selling Vans shoes, and he thought I would like their selection. Since the store was on the way home, I decided to make a pit stop just to check things out. I entered the store, and was greeted by the sounds of Brittney Spears over the speaker system. Anytime I head into a store I always make a point to see what music is being played, and upon hearing this I thought I would try and make this visit as short as possible. I do not even know who the second artist was that came on, but it sounded an awful lot like the first song I heard and at that point I gave up on hoping for any sort of likable music to guide me through the store. I was heading downstairs, on my way out of the store when it happened. A song came on that I had not heard in ages, one that had a special place in my heart. I just kind of stopped, and began to look at anything that was close just to be able to listen to the song in its entirity. As I went through the display of "funny" tee shirts, I had a woman come up to me and ask, "Excuse me, I noticed you singing along to the song could you tell me who is singing?" I was not even aware I was singing, but I guess when you love a song that much it is not something you even know you are doing. I was actually a little embarrassed, and even stunned because the woman who was asking me had to be close to 60. I told her it was Yo La Tengo, and the song was called "My Little Corner Of the World". She thanked me, even made a point to write it down and that was it. The song had finished and as I left the store I could hear Daughtry come on. I guess it felt a lot like when you are at a bar, and the music you chose at the jukebox comes on over the speakers. For that small moment in time you are happy, and nothing else matters but the music.
Not sure who did the video, but for some reason I really like it.

ha amazing. i know that feeling of entering a store when the song sucks...makes you lose serious respect :)
not that I was expecting great music, I mean it is Kohls, but when that song came on I was in heaven
aw that's both an excellent song and story. I too have found myself singing along with some surprising songs in random stores. Never heard YLT though. That Kohls must rock it!
It would have been better if I had gotten the shoes I wanted, guess everyone is wearing size ten these days
i always seem to get lionel ritchie...no matter where i go
"Hello? Is it me you're looking for?" oops, that just slipped out. Won't happen again, promise!
I had a similar (but better, I guess) experience I posted about, where I was in Ross and it was all Indie Music, obviously not chosen by the employees. I later learned they were playing Peter Bjorn and John's "Young Folks", which I still love.
Speaking of which, do yu or anyone knw where to find the Yo La Tengo song tht's on the intro to the movie "June Bug" (title, or anything)?
i'm getting a visual of the kohl's dj tied to the mixing board featuring brittany, daughtry and the rest of the pop tart nation
then he ever so slowly slides out a razor from his back pocket, cuts himself free, and throws in some tasteful sounds
either that or he is on crack or bipolar
August! ahaha
yeah that's the one...or All Night Long, of course
Will, what can I say? Lionel was my very first concert(w/Tina Turner opening) but then a friend turned me onto underground music w/ Psychedelic Furs & my taste in music changed & improved(thank goddess!).(Nice still of Lionel's bust from the "Hello" video btw)
