WE DO THE MASHED POTATO AND THE FUNKY CHICKEN

What would the super friends do?

Posted about 1 year ago

Got into a litle bit of a debate with fellow mogger Anna today about who would win in a fight. Not between her and I, jesus I know I would lose something fierce to a Greek robot. Our debate was about Spiderman and the Hulk, but I think we missed the bigger picture here. My question is, what do the Super Friends listen to on their Ipods while fighting crime through out the world? These are my thoughts:

Superman - Heavy on the american rock music so I am guessing John Cougar, Bruce Springsteen, Garth Brooks and maybe even some Billy Joel

Batman - He comes from the dark side so he has to listen to emo. My Chemical Romance, AFI, Underoath and any other band that wears more mascara than your girlfriend

Robin - Surely a bubble gum pop fan if I ever saw one. His Ipod is filled with the likes of N'Sync, Backstreet Boys, O Town and any other boy band that has one lead singer with a bunch of back up dancers.

Wonder Woman - Long live the feminist movement, and her music selection will back that statement up. Ani Difranco, Indigo Girls and the rest of the music you would have heard if you went to a Lilith Fair.

Aquaman - Guys lives in the sea so can you say New Age? Yanni would be his artist of choice and I am surprised Startrek3001 doesnt use his likeliness as an avitar.

The Flash - The man equals speed, so speed metal is what he is all about. early Metallica is his favorite, but he will also be listening to Mastadon, Helloween, Dragon Force and Primal Fear.

Wonder Twins - Man two kids and a monkey named Gleek, this screams of love for American Idol. Take any of the winners of this be-loved show and I am sure they have a song or two playing on their Ipods.

Honorable Mention:

Spiderman - Only because the Ramones covered his theme song, he became a huge lover of punk music. With the Ramones as his favorite, and other bands like NOFX, Agent Orange, The Clash and the New York Dolls round out his set list.

Hulk - Rock music, but the kind that kind of gets under your skin and makes you sick. Limp Bizcut, Creed, Linkin Park and other bands that for a short while seemed neat, but left the scene quicker than they came on. Come on, I think we all know it aint easy being green.

So many problems with this post. First, it's Spider-man, with a hyphen. Second, you start off a DC post with Marvel characters? Blasphemous.  Also, it's iPod, not Ipod but that's personal digression. There's a reason I'm not an English major. anyhow, that's just me being pointless.

Anyhow, if they had taste, based on your descriptions:

    Clark Kent: The Hold Steady

    Bruce Wayne: Aphex Twin

    Robin: Robyn

    Aquaman: Aquabats

The Flash: actually the speed metal is good

Wonder Twins: Radiohead, citing the Greenwoods

Spider-man: from Queens, so punk makes sense, but like real fucking hardcore, like Bad Brains

Hulk:Mastodon, A Place to Bury Strangers.

    Man, I'm cynical these days.

Nice Cody, but I still think Robin is a boy band follower. I mean with Batman he has lived in his shadow, and played back up for him. I like the Hulks selection you posted, I hate to think the Hulk listens to bad music

Aquaman understands whale and dolphin calls, probably even infrasound. I imagine our landlubber music is rather quaint to him. I give him full props for that.

As for our Amazonian girlfriend with that lasso of truth and bondage bracelets, I'm sure that by night, she's into a deeper scene than most of us have the stomach for, and those vocalists wear leather masks with zippers over the mouth. However, I'll bet she can also croon her own tender tunes when necessary. After all, she was created by a polyamorous couple that planned to extol the many virtues of a strong, dominant woman who could also appreciate the equally sublime pleasures of submission. Or something like that . . .

And, since Superman isn't even from earth, perhaps we should consider a different approach? Like Wagner operas? Assuming he has a Western aesthetic. Of course, he might be disgusted by an anti-semite German composer. But, I digress . . .

Neil, no worries at all I just figure the superfriends cant all listen to good music, and aquaman always seemed to get the short end of the stick.

I'm reading the 2008 Pulitzer Prize winner, The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao. Multi-era, multi-perspective story about a Domincan family in New Jersey in the 80s and early 90s. I've also read the new David Sedaris, When You Are Engulfed in Flames, which was solid, but not his best work. The first book I read this summer was Boomsday by Christopher Buckley, a political satire about a blooger named Cassandra Devine who incites riots on golf courses because she thinks baby boomers should kill themselves before they hit 70 to make Social Security solvent.

You're pretty much spot on.  I'd agree with most of Rawk's suggestions with an addendum to Aquaman - definitely throw in some Bebel Gilberto or Brazilian Girls in there.  Who were some of the secondary characters on Superfriends?  I seem to remember a giant Native American character who would yell "E-net-trock" or something like that.  And didn't each character have an evil arch rival?  Wouldn't that be fun to explore?  The Riddler?  He probably just listens to They Might Be Giants, Me First and the Gimmee Gimmes or old George Carlin comedy tapes.  Lex Luthar (sp?)?  He's a Johnny Cash/Social Distortion/Hank Williams type.

Cee I am glad I could make my mistress happy.

Watch, Boomsday just made my list of books I need to read. I am currently reading Schultz, mostly because I grew up reading all of the Snoopy books.

Eric, I was going to do exactly that, I headed to wiki and they had the listing of all the heroes as well as their arch rivals. I gotta say I love the idea of the Riddler listening to Carlin, somehow that seems to fit nicely!

As an old comics fan, I pretty much date the characters based on when they were created - DC, mostly in the Forties, so either they are not into music or are listeners like my parents.

Marvel, coming from the 60s, has characters that must be into the music of or similar to that decade. A bit like moi.
