MUSIC SIGNPOSTS ON THE WEB'S LONELY ROAD

Artist:

I grew up right when MTV was in their prime. No "reality" shows, just a lot of good videos being played. I also grew up listening to Yo MTV Raps, one of my favorite shows from when I was younger. Fab 5 Freddy, Dr. Dre and Ed Lover held down shop, and you never knew who was going to make an appearance from one show to the next. I also loved the fact that they played everything, and I do mean everything, from MC Lyte to NWA. Everyone who was good got to show their videos to the listening audience instead of seeing the same three artists on heavy rotation. Two things used to make that show for me, first was waiting all week for Friday to come. On Friday Ed Lover would break out his dance moves and do the Ed Lover dance. While I could not find actual footage of him doing it, I did find a few clowns doing there best to re-create the experience.

The other thing I loved about the show was the commercials for St. Ides Malt Liquor. At the time they had the top names in the rap game doing the ads, and the rhymes on them were quite good. I was able to find 3, so in honor of hip hop Thurdays tip back a bottle of the only beverage that will make your teeth numb. Snoop and 2 Pac

When I was growing up, I lived right down the road from the projects and I had a lot of friends who lived there. There was this section of the projects that was basically just a cement lawn that was about 50' x 50' and we played street hockey and stickball there all day and all night. On Friday nights when we would play (there were actually lights that worked) my friend who lived right next to the "lawn" would put the tv in the window and put on "Yo!!!". It was the soundtrack to my life between the ages of 10 and 15. I thought I was so gangsta back then. But looking back, I was just a skinny white kid who was a head taller than every other kid his age trying to fit in with the "thugs". I was a nasty street hockey goalie though, like the brick wall we used to spray paint the stupid street nicknames we gave each other on.

Those were the days.....

chul's dead on right there... man, when Cube was focused strictly on hip-hop, he was great... Boyz N Tha Hood? Great... Friday? Classic. But then there's "Are We There Yet," etc. Oh man... don't want to talk about it...

Great post Rawk. My friend Emil gave me a vintage St. Ides Passion poster with a really young Snoop on it once. I think it's in storage somewhere... that sh*t's gotta get framed...

The videos look smashing (can't seem to view 'em however Lizzie's did play) - hate to admit, but I do not recall Yo! MTV Raps show; what can I say but that I was a 'deprived' child!

I think we had this show here, too, but without the adds of course. But that time, i haven't been into HipHop. I only remember that MTV was good 15 years ago. Somewhen it began to suck. Nice post.

Laying low, man. Planning a three year old's birthday party for Saturday. Preparing for family to be in town. Cleaning the place. Also trying to keep a steady stream of fresh, warm flesh through the house. It ain't easy bein' cheezy. ;)

Just make sure you have enough garbage bags for all the wrapping paper. After my son had his first, I was amazed at the sheer amount of presents he got.
