Today was the last of my rejection calls from potential employers. If any of you have been following my search for new employment, you know my history here. Boy decides to leave teaching after 10 years to look for a better paying job. Sixth months later, I am back where I started. While part of me is disappointed I am not able to land another type of job, another part of me misses the daily routine of teaching. I made the call this morning to Human Resources to find out what I need to do to get back into the classroom. Hopefully I can start subbing at least, and go from there. I know with my year sabbatical, I should have a spot in the district again next year; I can only hope that with budget cuts I do not have to do too many interviews. I am quite confident when it comes to interviews of this sort, my first teaching interview they hired me on the spot. Anywho, I know this is non-music related but at this point I don’t really care. Thanks for the words of support from all of you, and I say good night sir.

Sory to hear that you could not secure employment otherwise, but it's good to hear that we'll have another good teacher in the ranks. I just wish it would pay more.

I sympathize, Raw. I'm looking for a better paying job and/or something more in the realm of what I like doing (writing creatively; editing). I am also in search of part-time work, but I can't seem to get anything other than the promise of a retail work (I finished college in hopes that I’d never have to work retail again; its just not for me). I'm sorry you're back to a career that you felt kinda burned out on, but at least you still have some zest for it, right? I hope everything goes well for you, and that the interview process is not long and tedious. If it’s all right with you, I'll keep you in my prayers. Peace, Raw. Hattie.

You spent 10 years and then walked away... that's a little strange they say that if you last 5 years in a job like: Teaching, Nursing, Emergency services (police, fire, EMT) that you will most likely stay in the field.... what level were you teaching? what about another school district (I bet Edina pays pretty well) or teaching at the Jr College level?
As for the job search... while I am currently employed I have been looking to move up and on and been mostly shut out of everything I applied for in the last year and a half.... currently I have 3 open apps in the company and hope that I will get one of the jobs I applied for...

Hey Kev - sorry to hear you're disappointed. But as others have said, kids really need as many positive role models these days as they can get, particularly men. I don't know about where you are, but here there are definitely not enough men teaching. And as we all know, there are many many boys out there who really need a man to look up to. And if more men taught, maybe the pay would go up...? You wanna believe it.
Ah well, money's not everything. In fact, it's not much of anything at all. But if you do wanna save some cash, why not consider the overseas option? It's quite an experience, I'd be happy to share mine with you. I had a great year and made lots of cash.

I'm sorry to hear this too Kevin. I know you have done lots of soul-searching and thinking about this, but keep working on it. Maybe you could go back to school, or move to another state. I know here in North Carolina they are paying larger salaries and recruiting teachers from Northern states to come here . . . ever thought about it?

You can hold your head up high knowing you made a concerted effort.

Sorry to hear it dude. I think we're both in the same boat. I sent my apps in to go back to grad school about a month ago, I had dropped out of grad school because I didn't like it and wanted to get a "real" job. C'est la vie. Best wishes for everything, hopefully things turned out this way for a (good) reason. :)

Dale thanks, hope this works out for the best.
Hattie, maybe this time off from teaching has rekindled the flame. I can only hope so, I have been feeling that I am missing the classroom, so maybe it was just a break I needed.
Iren, I know they say the burnout rate for teachers is around 3 years. I did special ed for a while, then regular 6th grade for the rest. The only thing that worries me about switching districts is that I would lose my 10 years experience. I would start out again as if I was a teacher right out of college, and I do not want to do that.
Kristiana, you are right about the money thing, but there are things in life I want to do. I have thought about the overseas option, and I am still investigating it. I know what you mean about the role of a male teacher. Many of the kids I taught didnt even have dads. I cant tell you the amount of times kids called me dad.
LadyC, I hope I dont come off as boring of a teacher as that guy!
Mkta, the thought of moving to someplace new is exciting yet scary. I had a friend do that and it worked out wonderfully. I am just afraid of the peer pressure of choosing between NC State and the tarheels
Marco, its held high, yet I cant help but feel defeated. From the lack of call backs for interviews, I feel teachers are not very well respected as professionals.

Right back at ya Lemontwist, not to do the cliche thing but things happen for a reason.

:::BigSquooshyHugz::: Sorry they didn't realize what a great asset they just passed up. A mind is a terrible thing to waste and your decision to go back to teaching, just helps to enrich the minds of others for years to come. Think of all the music knowledge you can entwine into your lesson plans. Rawk, I could see you as the teacher everyone loves because you'd make learning fun.

Mutter, one of the things I miss doing is name that tune mondays. The kids loved it, and still talk about how much they miss it. I would make a mix cd of 25 songs, old, new you name it. I would play each song for them, if they got the song and or artist, piece of candy for them. It made them want to come to school on monday, and helped them learn about a lot of music. By the way thanks for the BigSquooshyHugz!

As Kristiana said & others said, children desperately need good role models. And for what it's worth, I'd love to have you as a teacher. G luck with all.

Thanks Anna

Hey Rawk, I feel your pain literally. We are in the same boat. I'm trying to change careers myself. I used to be in social work for 10 years & was a case manager among other things working w/physically disabled teenagers, adults & chronically mentally ill street people. I, like you, got burned out & had to get out. I then moved to CA from OR & got into the wine industry selling wine over the phone(glorified telemarketing but I loved the wine aspect, it was fascinating) which I did for almost 9 yrs. So I've taken a year & a half off & still don't know what I wanna be when I grow up.
I've applied & tried several different jobs in that time. It's difficult to change careers cause anytime you make a change into a different profession you have to start all over again as you know. It's a bitch & the rejection is rough. EVERYONE wants experience, ya know? So it looks like I'll probably do some more telemarketing until something better comes along. Gah! Oh well.
Hang in there bud, something will come through soon!

Isn't it amazing, how hard it is to leave a field when you get stuck there? Good lord, I almost couldn't escape receptionist jobs. I started to get the feeling I'd be there for ever and ever and EVER.
Teaching, however, is much better than screening sales calls for unresponsive execs in fancy suits. IMHO. I know it's a lot, but could you try taking a part-time, low-paying job in a field you like, while you teach? That's how I did it, in the end. Not that I'm done (still working several jobs); but it is working.
My Trusted MOGs
Damn. I'm with Jess here. I would sub if I were you and keep trying for the job you want. It would be worth the effort in the long run to keep working for what you really want.
My Trusted MOGs
Well, I most likely will have to sub for the remainder of the year. The pay is pretty good for that, and I wont have the take home work of a regular teacher. I will be keeping my eyes open, but sometime in the not so distant future I will be going back to school for my graphic arts degree.
