You and me and New Order under the covers

Posted over 2 years ago
Earlier this week I found myself talking to fellow mogger Anna about covers of New Order and Joy Division tunes. We decided to each post a list of popular, or not so popular covers of each of these bands. I had to claim New Order as my own, seeing they have to be my all time favorite band. I made a post a while back on covers, and how they can be received poorly by fans of the original band. I happen to love them, especially if they take the song in a new direction. With a lot of the New Order covers I have heard, artists have done just that. New Order have always had a sound that was their own. I feel they have managed to influence many bands, and I am never surprised to hear when a band says their music in some way was influenced by them. So with out any further ado, my list of 15 great New Order covers.1. The Get Up Kids - "Regret"2. Moby - "Temptation"3. Frente! - "Bizarre Love Triangle"4. Flunk - "Blue Monday"5. Galaxy 500 - "Ceremony"6. Flight - "Dreams Never End"7. Sandowski - "Everythings Gone Green"8. Bush - "In A Lonely Place"9. Iron and Wine - "Love Vigilantes"10. Colorblind - "Round and Round"11. Silver Scooter - "Run"12. International - "The Perfect Kiss"13. Evaluna - "Thieves Like Us"14. Ghoti Hook - "True Faith"15. Tin God - "Your Silent Face"That should be about a cd's worth, hope you enjoy the tunes.

  1. Dale says That's a nice list, I was only familiar with the Frente!, Moby, Galaxie 500, and Bush covers. I can also recommend these: Razed In Black - Everything's Gone Green Orgy - Blue Monday (OK, very overplayed, but still good) Voxtrot - Love Vigilantes

  3. Dale says I wondered what she was going on about; I should have known it would be a doozy. I need to figure out a way to tag covers so I can find them easier.

  17. Rawkkiddoh says Chul I do not know what the hell you are talking about, it clearly says 15 cover songs. Man, did you forget your englich while in France? Goodmusic, I had not heard that cover, but I am heading over to Itunes to have a listen. Chucky, never side with Chul, its like siding with the devil.......... August, I would have included links but I am not that kool with the computer. El Monko, I will not comment. They had the game after the opening kickoff, and blew it. Grossman bit it, and I am guessing that there will be a good battle for starting qb next year.

  23. Augusts1 says Kev, it's ok if you don't know how to link the songs, it just woulda been easier on this end to find them all. New Order is one of my favs too, so how can you go wrong covering them? I'm sure there are some bad NO covers out there but generally if you were influenced by them you wouldn't shame them w/a bad version. Good, I've heard the Grant Lee Phillips(formerly of Grant Lee Buffalo) cd "Nineteeneighties" & loved it w/it's folk inspired covers of all '80s new wave songs. I highly recommend it! Chul, you are a little anal retentive there aren't you, lol, w/all your numbers & keyboard symbols. I bet I could make that little symbol if I knew how, hehe since I have an Hewlett Packard dual core processor laptop that I got back in July. Since I'm still a techno peasant learning how to work this thang I bet I can do most things but just haven't figured it out.

  25. mister gary at work again says I'm all about a live bootleg I've got of the Afghan Whigs doing "Regret" ... But the Get Up Kids version's pretty tight, too. I still think "1963" would be a great tune to cover, though.

  28. Rawkkiddoh says In my case all the way back August. Mister, I agree 1963 would indeed be a great song to cover, even better if the GUK's did it. Lilith, I will be waiting for the post.

  29. haggardpilot says I track down as many as I possibly can, no matter how bad they get. I have some crazy ones. Cobra Verde - Temptation Ming - Subculture Devine and Statton - Bizarre Love Triangle (really makes it more bizarre) Mathilde Santing - Blue Monday (much preferable to that other one...) and more. I have never heard the Iron and Wine one! OMG!

  30. Perpetual Emotion Machine says I was never a big fan of the Orgy 'Blue Monday' but I bought the CD single anyway when it came out... because of the remixes by Optical and Peter Rauhofer of Club 69. But the DJ Dan remix on the single is really excellent. It samples the original New Order song, and grooves on it for a while, so it's got a very New Orderish feel. If you can find it it worth checking out.

  33. Rawkkiddoh says Thanks for the link Neill! Haggard, you should try and find the album Blue Order, a New Order Tribute. Its really good, and is perfect for backround music during just about any occasion. The Iron and Wine one is one of my favorites! Perpetual Emotion Machine I will be checking out the recomendations at some point today, I love music that includes samples from bands I like. August...........Dorothy? Thanks Satisfied, and another I hate you vibe sent your way. You and your damn Coachella, you are going to make me sell a lung or something.

  36. Augusts1 says I saw NO back in the day in Portland, OR. They opened for the B52s. Talk about an awesome double bill! That was back in '89 when the B52's were at their most popular w/the hit "Loveshack" & NO had released "Technique". NO put on an amazing show & the house was packed. I recall dancing by booty off through that whole concert, lol! I think that was the first time NO had come through Portland. I'll mogmail you about Dorothy.

  42. SamTheButcher says GUK's "Regret" is one of my favorite covers. It's such a straight cover, it's not funny, but it's really good. I just remembered - "Love Vigilantes" by Poi Dog Pondering. Really great cover as well.

  43. Rawkkiddoh says Adam, i would love to see the Arcade Fire version. Another solid post Lilith, I see this list of songs I want to get growing. Sam, the GUK's version is just as you said it, and I too love that version. I have not hear the Love Vigilantes cover, but will be looking for it tonight.

  45. Augusts1 says p.s. Love that NIN cover off 'The Crow' soundtrack. That whole soundtrack is great. That U2/Arcade Fire cover sounds musically good but the vocals are what suck and I like Bono. I don't care for Arcade Fire though. '
    Permalink posted 02/06/2007
  46. Rawkkiddoh says August, I mean that in a very nice way. As far as I see, any one who has gotten to see New Order sucks. Only because I suck because I have not seen them yet. They are at the top of my list of concerts to see before I die.....or get turned into a Meez.
    Permalink posted 02/06/2007
  47. Augusts1 says Ok I see. That's some pretty twisted logic but I get it, lol! Yea, if you're a big NO fan I'm surprised you haven't seen them. There are several dvds they've released of them in concert that I own as well. Here are the ones I have: New Order 316: New York 81, Reading Festival 98 And In Conversation (This one shows them live in their first year as NO & although they sound great, they aren't too interesting too watch since they just stand & play & don't move around much. Reading Fest is pretty good though. By the time I saw them in '89 they'd figured out how to put on an entertaining show. This is worth it just to hear/see them in their infancy live). New Order 511: Finsbury Park 9th June 02 (This one is a GREAT concert that includes a few songs off 'Get Ready' & they seriously rock.) Check on Amazon.com for the track listings. There are a few others they have out but I bought these two cause they were more bang for my buck & covered both ends of their career.

  48. Rawkkiddoh says As far as I know August, they have come here twice. Once in 89 when I was not really going to shows, and more recently for a festival that the tickets were around 120. I figured they would come again, and now I hold my breath. I did get to see the Pet Shop Boys recently, and that was a great show as well.
    Permalink posted 02/06/2007
  49. Augusts1 says You got me there Kev, cause I haven't seen Pet Shop Boys but from what I've seen & heard they put on a big, dramatic stage show. They were in San Fran in Nov. but tix were like $45.00(close to $60.00 w/all the 'convenience' charges) & I just didn't want to spend that much to see them(not into them THAT much). I do have an older VHS movie of them called "It Couldn't Happen Here" which is like an extended video with various songs of theirs. Pretty off the wall theatrics but enjoyable. Very artsy.

  51. SamTheButcher says Rk, get the vids that A1 mentions above. I rented 'em from Netflix and it was better than the couple of times I've seen them. (sorry to rub that in...) They were probably good when I saw 'em, but I wasn't into the dance aspect, which would've made it better. No, sorry. Make that the *few* times I've seen 'em. I saw 'em on the Brotherhood tour and *that* bloody rocked. Although, from the comment here, I was mistaken. :) (11-Nov-86 in Boulder)

  52. Rawkkiddoh says Sam, I am envious. I will have to add those vids to my Netfilx list, most likely tonight. Oh and by the way, you suck as well. Even more so, Brotherhood tour......thats just not fair.

  53. SamTheButcher says Oh, dude, I suck HARD. Did I mention I saw the Smiths about the same time? Dunno if you're a Smiths fan or not, but if you are, that really sucks. :) I've got lots of "you suck" concert experiences. Unfortunately, they're all from about at least 13 or so years ago. Unless you count Steve Burns and Jets to Brazil as "you suck" concerts, in which case, I've sucked up until a couple of years ago. :D
    Permalink posted 02/07/2007
  54. Rawkkiddoh says Laughing, but still hating. The Smiths would have been killer to see. I guess my "you suck" concert was Janes Addiction at 7th Street Entry here in Minneapolis. I am sure I have a few more, I am going to have to look through your online collection to taunt you.
    Permalink posted 02/07/2007
  55. SamTheButcher says There aren't many more like that. You can ask me about any of the shows on this list. That's pretty much everyone, I think.
