I have a confession to make. I have become over the past few years a regular viewer of the show "One Tree Hill". You know, one of those teen drama's that almost defines guilty pleasure? I find the storylines are usually decent, even if they're ridiculous, but I do acknowledge that the show is very uneven as far as quality goes. However, there is one thing that has never wavered in the shows 4 seasons, and that is the music. Week after week, the music was always great, always matching perfectly with the scene. The song that ends every episode is flawlessly chosen to fit the storyline and the mood. I've discovered so many artists through this show there is no way I can count them all, but I'll give some examples. This show lead me to Butch Walker, who has since become my favorite artist ever. This show is what made me love Jimmy Eat World and Keane. It was on this very show that I first heard such outstanding songs as Snow Patrol's "Run", Stereophonics' "Rewind", and Jackson Waters' "Center of Attention". Anyway, the reason I'm writing is because of a phenomenon the show recently caused for me. On the shows 5th season premiere on Tuesday night, I heard I song that I absolutely loved about a decade ago, but have since forgotten about. But hearing that song, hearing it as the soundtrack for the end of the episode somehow reinvigorated it for me. It was just so perfectly placed in the show, and now it won't leave my head. I cannot stop listening to it. That song is the Verve Pipe's 90's number one hit "The Freshmen". Back in the time when i really loved that song, I was just a kid, I loved the sound but i never really paid attention the lyrics, never realized all the meaning in them, never realized how heartbreaking that song is. The opening line of that song (the title of this post) is somehow the sound of a man looking back on his life with a million regrets. And in one word thats what this song is really about: regret. And that just fit really well with the tone of the show. How one mistake can change your life completely. How if he had done one thing differently then all of his dreams would have come true. How if he could just change one stupid mistake maybe she would still be here. *The first of those regrets is from the show, and the second from the very meaning of the song.
