AC/DC Does a Rock Video...in Excel

Posted over 3 years ago

Confession time: I work at Microsoft, developing Mac software--specifically Word for the Macintosh. I say that, because there's a bit of a back story on this that some Mac heads will find a bit amusing.

For you fans of ASCII art, AC/DC has done a version of Rock 'n' Roll Train that displays animated ASCII scenes in Excel. I've embedded the YT version of the video below. It's rather cool.

The animation uses Visual Basic for Applications (VBA), the scripting language for Excel on Windows. However, as Mac heads know well, we had to cut support for VBA in the most recent version of Office for the Macintosh (Mac Excel does support AppleScript for scripting). So, the video doesn't run in Mac Excel. Bummer.

Well, someone at work noticed this fact, and, today, entered a bug in our bug database with the title "AC/DC Doesn't Rock in Mac Excel." So, there you have it. We're not going to ship the next version of Mac Excel until AC/DC rocks it.
