Quincy the Producer

Posted about 1 year ago
I've been wrestling with the best way to talk about Quincy Jones the producer, and there's really no way to get around discussing Michael Jackson. Quincy produced Michael's two break-out albums Off the Wall and Thriller. The first was a phenomenal success in its own right. The latter set the standard for success that really hasn't been surpassed since. The credit for that success, in my opinion, goes more to Quincy than to Michael, and nothing shows this to quite the extent that Beat It does. Start with TOTO as your backup band, loop Eddie Van Halen in for the guitar solo, and put Michael out front dancing. Nothing short of the genius of Quincy Jones can take those incoherent ingredients and turn out a smash hit.The video is really just an audio interview of Steve Lukather, Mike Porcaro, Greg Phillinganes and Quincy himself discussing the making of the Thriller album.

  1. Bartleby says Thriller is also the album which brought producer-super stardom to Q - introducing him to a whole new generation. Thanks for continuing your series on Q. J.
