Little Feat w/ Mick Taylor

Posted about 4 years ago
One of my desert island disks is Little Feat's Waiting for Columbus, which was recorded live at the Rainbow Theatre in London and Lisner Auditorium in Washington, DC. Part of what makes that a desert island disk is the inclusion of the Tower of Power horns. On the break for Dixie Chicken, for example, the horns break into a little dixieland jazz before the song returns to the second verse. This clip is from the Rainbow Theatre show, and features Mick Taylor on guitar. The performance in the clip differs slightly from the one on the album, and I'm not entirely sure why. The album had some overdubbing done to it, but there are other parts that are slightly different. I'm inclined to think that the differences are overdubs. This was two years before Lowell George died, and gives a good idea of the energy of that show. I also love George's humor in this song; "I don't care if it's the unholy four of John Wayne and Dorothy Lamar."

  2. DLuebbert says The hardest part of mining YouTube and the other video sites is guessing that a particular band or musician would have something up there. You just opened up a shiny new vein in the mountain!

  4. RSchaut says Tipi, "Shake the loose change from your old fruit jar." (And I didn't have to listen to more than the first couple of bars. DL, Yeah, it was a nice find. I wasn't expecting it, but, when I saw the date of the recording, I had to look it up just to be certain.

  6. RSchaut says DL, "was?" They're still around and touring. I think the recording Tipi posted is rather recent. By the way, that should be "short change," which proves two things. That my memory for lyrics sucks, and that I did, indeed, pick out the song rather quickly.

  8. DLuebbert says I didn't follow them much after the 80's. Thanks for the correction.

  9. mmars says Well, the band Little Feat is around, but Lowell George isn't. He died of a massive heart attack in 1979 & he WAS the front man. "Waiting for Columbus" IS a great live album. So I guess you're both right. Oh, and let's give Mick Taylor credit. Great keys - some of the best chicken picken blues ever.
