WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Speaking Latin

Posted 7 months ago

Yeah, it's Funky Friday, and I've been knocking myself out trying to find something new to post with not luck whatsoever.

In the mean time, I've run across this gem. I knew about this show (and have only recently found the full recording on Internet Archive), and decided that it needed to be shared right away.

What happens when you take two extremely talented soloists, and stick them in front of a rhythm section that can lay down an incredible groove? Answer: There's a reason that Santana refers to Derek as "The Anointed One".

Enjoy:

Update: By the way, the performance of Anyday from the same concert is otherworldly. I'd upload it but, at 19.1 MB, it's beyond MOG's file size limit. You can download it from the Internet Archive link above.

Good stuff.  Never heard Derek Trucks before, but he sounds like he fits right in with Santana's sound, and can play endless solos.

Hm.  Now I wonder if it's clear, or not, that this isn't Derek sitting in with Santana's band.  Rather, this is Santana sitting in with Dereks' band.  My bad if that wasn't clear from the outset.

In some sense, that's half of the story here.  Trucks has gathered around himself a group of musicians who really are capable of playing any music they want to, and not just passably either.

Touché!  What I should have said was that it's hard for me to tell them apart here, especially since Santana has flirted with Latin rhythms in the past.  Had I previously studied Trucks' melodic pecadillos more carefully, it probably would have been easier for me to tell them apart here.
