WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

SUTC: Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton

Posted 8 months ago

Sometimes you just never know what you'll find when you search for a song title via google's video search. In this case, I was looking for a specific rendition of Les McCann's Compared to What (which, I believe, was co-written with Eddie Harris, but I'm not sure).

Several people have covered this song, including Roberta Flak, Ray Charles, Dee Dee Bridgewater and there's a rare version floating around done by Al Jarreau (that is difficult to find and is the one I've been looking for).

In any event, here it's used as a vehicle for Jeff Beck's formidable improvisational skills, and works in a way that one wouldn't expect from a couple of old English rockers, though I think the jury's still out on Doyle Bramhall's vocals.
