WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Teen Drops Out of High School To Become Professional “Guitar Hero”

Posted over 1 year ago

WHAT WILL THEY THINK OF NEXT?

IDJITS :)

Call it The Decline of Western Civilization IV: Blake Peebles, a teenager in North Carolina, recently dropped out of high school to pursue his dream of playing music. While this sounds like an everyday occurrence, there is a catch: Peebles dropped out so he can concentrate on playing Guitar Hero with hopes of becoming good enough at hitting colored plastic buttons to play in the surprisingly-lucrative world of competitive gaming. Peebles has already won a few Hero tournaments, but so far his winnings include gift certificates, gaming equipment and 52 Chick-fil-A meals. For what it's worth, Peebles was doing poorly to begin with in school, and his parents have since hired him a private tutor. If Peebles lives up to his high-flying Guitar Hero dreams, he could earn up to $80,000 a year on the competitive circuit, though groupies should be slightly harder to come by.

There was an article in the Sunday NY Times a couple weeks back about the kid who holds the official Guitar Hero record - 1191 notes without a miss. I told my kids, "yeah, but he lives in Minnesota, what else is there to do?" Then I read the rest of the article, and the kid was a poster boy for game companies - totally normal, athletic, does well in school,  good looking blah blah blah - shit, I'm none of those things and I suck at Guitar Hero.

The great thing is the kids always seem to be going for speed and playing Dragonforce, but put on QOTSA 3's & 7's and those weirdass rhythms mess em up.

I will pay people to play video games, but sorry Darren, it requires specific people and a certain amount of nudity.

In the words of Chauncy Gardiner - "I like to watch."
