  2. RobP says Well, I knew he'd done Across the Universe during the Young Americans sessions. I like Bowie, but that one didn't do much for me. Didn't know about the rest of this, though. He's gotta be among the least likely people to do Working Class Hero (and I can't help but notice that 3 out of 5 tracks from "Bowie Sings Beatles" are covers of songs from Lennon's solo work; Across The Universe is actually the track that seems closest to Bowie's style, as he floats like a demon from station to station.) Marianne Faithfull does a killer version of Working Class Hero, although Springsteen seemed like the 70s rocker it suited best (have ya heard his version of It's My Life? Go to Youtube, do yrself a favor.)

  9. B42 says as long as we were talkin' Bowie figured I may as well throw it in the mix. I love those guys, supposed to have a new album out soon.

  10. RobP says Working Class Hero shoulda been released as an instrumental; the band sounds great, but how the fuck ya gonna beat a great Lennon vocal? Also really enjoyed the video. Penny Lane's never done that much for me, great opportunity for Bowie to go feyer than fey and I think he missed it, it's one of those songs he could've done when he was music hall before he was any good. Maybe it should be covered by someone like the Twilight Sad, where the accents could obscure the lyrics so much you might forget em and try to figure out what the crazy Scotsman's saying.

  11. dark-horse says Flight of the Conchords? Heck-frikkin'-yeah! Don't mind me, I like everything.

  12. Jonh Ingham says Bowie has never really made a cover version his own. For a guy who lives inside his own music so convincingly he always seems really artificial with the work of others. Mind you, a couple of years ago he did a superb version of Waterloo sunset.

  15. contrabandwidth says Didn't he also cover this on the first Tin Machine album?

  16. ROCKNROLLPIMP says why how correct you are and i believe THAT is the version!

  17. contrabandwidth says Guess I shoulda listened. Silly me, your right, it is. It was really the only song I liked off that album. On a totally different note but cover related - Bowie did an excellent reworking of Tin Machines "I Can't Read" that was on the Ice Storm soundtrack, that I have never been able to track down. Slowed it down and I believe it was acoustic, much more soulful.

  20. Lyrikhan says to go on Jonh's comment about Bowie never really making a cover his "own" I'll throw this out there..... I suppose not really a cover since he is playing with Rick Wright and Dave Gilmour, but Wright said he felt that Bowie really made this song his "own" with his vocal performance... you can be the judge

  21. ROCKNROLLPIMP says honestly. no way do i feel this version is superior to the original,or even on par. but that lp is VERY dear to my heart n soul *RAWK*

  22. ROCKNROLLPIMP says *contrabandwidth* VERY GROOVY and far superior to the tin machine version

  23. ROCKNROLLPIMP says btw *WILL* that is an excellent performance. that just be one of those songs....you don't touch hahahaha
    Permalink posted 03/31/2008
  24. Lyrikhan says well i certainly would rather listen to the original by all means i think what Wright's point was that he changes the songs dramatically with his vocal style on it....not necessarily something that outshines the original....just takes it on a different path..."owns" could be the wrong word in the situation i'd say if you are covering the Beatles of Floyd it is pretty much impossible to outshine an original in peoples minds due to the love and legendary status both bands carry with them perhaps there are exceptions....Cockers version of "With a little help from my friends" comes to mind

  25. ROCKNROLLPIMP says yeah,ok i get you now he does a good job no doubt joe cocker,i thought for the longest, owned that song i was late to the beatles my friend only been in the last 10 years or so i even gave em props. *WHOOPS*

  26. Lyrikhan says better late than never :) my parent were products of the 60s...i was force fed Beatles at an early age probably heard "With A Little Help..." on The Wonder Years before I ever heard the Beatles version tho ... heh

  28. contrabandwidth says I would ad, I think he does a great job with The Pixies "Cactus": and I've always been fond of his cover of Jaques Brell's "Port of Amsterdam", even if he did take a chapter from Scott Walker:
