Panda Internet Security 2007 warning:Panda Internet Security 2007 has detected this message as a hoax. The content of this type of message tries to deceive users, therefore, you should ignore it and delete it. BETTER SAFE THAN SORRY. READ AND HEED. I just verified this with Snopes and it is REAL. PLEASE INFORM EVERYONE Emails with pictures of Osama Bin-Laden hanged are being sent and the moment that you open these emails your computer will crash and you will not be able to fix it! If you get an email along the lines of "Osama Bin Laden Captured" or "Osama Hanged" don't open the attachment. This e-mail is being distributed through countries around the globe, but mainly in the US and Israel Be considerate & send this warning to whomever you know. PLEASE FORWARD THIS WARNING AMONG FRIENDS, FAMILY AND CONTACTS: You should be alert during the next days: Do not open any message with an attached file called "Invitation" regardless of who sent it. It is a virus that opens an Olympic Torch which "burns" the whole hard disc C of your computer. This virus will be received from someone who has your e-mail address in his/her contact list, that is why you should send this e-mail to all your contacts. It is better to receive this message 25 times than to receive the virus and open it If you receive a mail called "invitation", though sent by a friend, do not open it and shut down your computer immediately. This is the worst virus announced by CNN, it has been classified by Microsoft as the most destructive virus ever. This virus was discovered by McAfee yesterday, and there is no repair yet for this kind of virus. This virus simply destroys the Zero Sector of the Hard Disc, where the vital information is kept. SEND THIS E-MAIL TO EVERYONE YOU KNOW

  2. fairportfan says BOGUS! For instance, snopes, com, referenced in the e-mail says, "*about the "Invitation" virus*":http://snopes.com/computer/virus/invitation.asp:
The classics never go away, it seems, so just in time for the 2006 Winter Olympics someone has dusted off an old virus warning hoax (most commonly seen in its incarnation as the "[Virtual] Card for You" hoax) and reintroduced it as an "Olympic Torch" virus warning (also known as the "Invitation virus"). The same basic hoax has been circulating in various languages since at least 2000, with occasional changes along the way. No such (incurable) virus exists, has been identified by McAfee, or was reported on by CNN.
(Microsoft doesn't report on viruses, BTW.)
"*What Snopes actually has to say about the 'Hanged Osama virus'*":http://snopes.com/computer/virus/osama.asp virus:
are few headlines that would grab the attention of more computer users around the world than news of Osama bin Laden's having been captured or killed, so that's exactly the bait pranksters have used more than once in attempting to lure unsuspecting victims users of Microsoft Windows platforms into installing malicious code onto their computers.
In July 2004 a message claiming to offer links to photographs of Osama Bin Laden's suicide was spammed (as outlined in this BBC news post) to multiple newsgroups. The links actually tricked users into opening a file that installed the Backdoor.Hacarmy.D trojan horse.
In June 2005, similarly-themed e-mail message claimed to offer images of the capture and arrest of Osama bin Laden scanned from news videos and collected in an attached ZIP file, but the attachment actually harbored a version of the Psyme Trojan.
Both trojans were easily detected and removed with updated virus protection software, and neither Osama message is circulating widely or poses much of a threat to PC users any more.

The whole purpose of thses hoax messages is to cause people to unnecessarily forward them to everyone they know, in order to inconvenience people and to tie up e-mail systems (imagine the average corporate e-mail system if everyone with e-mail privileges starts sending spams this big to everyone in their address books?).
I made a previous post about protecting your computer - so long as you keep up - to - date on anti-virus and anti-malware and run a good firewall (i've changed my opinion on that; "*Komodo's free firewal*:"http://personalfirewall.comodo.com/l tests better in some tests than even any you have to pay for, and is less hassle than ZoneAlarm...)
Years ago, i did a "*post about this sort of thing on my website*":http://electronictiger.com/commentary/rants/rantpage15.htm - a few days later, i got an e-mail from a college professor asking permission to use it in a course he was teaching. (The links in that may or may not still be good - however, the link to F-Secure's "*Virus Hoax Database*":http://www.f-secure.com/virus-info/hoax/, the industry standard, is still valid and worth checking whenever you get one of these "Virus Warning" e-mails...)

  4. fairportfan says Hey, anything to be helpful. At least i didn't use the word "Idiot" to refer to you like i did referring to the guy who stimulated "*my 'Rant!' that i referenced*":http://electronictiger.com/commentary/rants/rantpage15.htm...

  6. fairportfan says Well, considering my current dragon avatar, you might be justified in calling *me* a little "Backward". (It took me twenty minutes on Google Image to find a dragon and a flamethrower i could rework that way...)
