Local View: Gun-free zones put innocent at risk

Posted over 2 years ago
Friday, April 20, 2007BY MICHAEL S. BROWN My first reaction to the Virginia Tech massacre was to wonder how a man with two simple handguns was allowed to kill so many people. That question was quickly answered as the tragic news poured in. The most striking common factor in mass shootings in America is that they always take place in areas that are designated as gun-free zones. Maniacs in a homicidal rage seek out gun-free zones with an uncanny precision. There they know they will be like a wolf among penned sheep, killing at will until they are eventually hunted down by law enforcement or decide their mission is accomplished and end their own tortured life. Gun-free schools, offices, shopping malls and factories are the favorite targets. Some gun-free zones, such as courthouses and jails, are never targeted, because they are protected by armed guards and metal detectors. When administrators give in to the siren's simplistic call to create a gun-free zone without a corresponding increase in security, they are putting everyone there at risk. Gun-banning administrators are morally obligated, I feel, to provide armed security. Unfortunately, this is economically impossible in most cases and in some places the sensitivities of the local community make armed security too disturbing. Gun control laws are about as useful as alcohol prohibition. They have failed around the world. Criminals and lunatics simply ignore the laws and go about their dirty business. The sensible alternative is to make use of the free security provided by lawfully armed citizens. Defenders who are already present at the time of an attack can easily identify the attacker and know the layout of the building. Contrast this with the difficult task facing police officers entering an unfamiliar building filled with people they don't know. Foolish to trust 'pretend laws'Millions of good Americans are now licensed to carry a concealed handgun. They have decided that they won't be helpless victims. But if you work or study in a place that prohibits guns you must choose between risking your career and risking your safety. One can only imagine the horror of being trapped by an armed killer, knowing that since you left your pistol at home to avoid getting fired or expelled, neither you nor your friends has any means to stop him. Obviously, some people would be shocked to know that their fellow professors or office workers are armed, but that is the beauty of the concealed weapons concept; they don't have to know that they are being protected. They can go on blissfully living in their pacifist paradise. Anti-self-defense laws are what French Canadian professor Pierre Lemieux calls "pretend laws." Politicians pretend that they will protect us and we pretend that we feel safer. It is only when we are confronted with our own self-deception that we must admit the truth. Ironically, in 2006, the state of Virginia had a chance to pass a law that would have allowed permit holders to carry guns on campus. When the bill failed to pass out of committee, a Virginia Tech spokesperson said, "This will help parents, students, faculty and visitors feel safe on our campus." Pretend laws indeed. Until we face reality , the random slaughter will continue. Michael S. Brown practices optometry in Vancouver and is a board member of Doctors for Sensible Gun Laws: www.dsgl.org

  1. dogpelt says I would suggest that the most striking common factor in all mass shootings is that the perpetrator has at least one gun.Does this perhaps have something to do with their availability?

  4. RGM says Plenty of people have guns where I live gun fire is a part of life for me, one thing...we have very low crime. Murders are rare here, if you take out someone who shoots up a school of mall here the police thank you. because usually more people would have been taken out...remember people kill gun or no gun please just don't try to win an aurgument. I know you mean well but we have a low crime rate crimenals don't follow rules, I'll say this look at prohibition, look at the drug war. I would exspect the same for guns except Law abinding citizens will follow the law, criminals won't. They love your mentality. It's not an insult just information your way does sound logical but sorry I have to disagree...

  6. Dompaczko says So I am gussing, although not 100% that you are from America....the country with the biggest gun releated death rates in the entire world...for someone to actually justify giving people more guns to stop other people with gun is possibly the most stupid thing I have ever heard. Its that kind of war like attitude which is destorying your country, and the very same attitude reaches the very top. Look at the current climate in Iraq and soon to be Iran and possible even N.Korea, look at the Cold War.....doesnt that just show that the attitude doesn't work?!?!? Michael S Brown is clearly an idiot who deserve no respect from anyone....a mamber of the NRA perhaps?

  7. dermahrk says Hey, I just declared America and "immigrant-free zone". OK! All Immigration problems solved now. Next issue? And what country are you from, Dompaczko? I'm sure it's a paradise. If not, just pass a law calling it a "trouble-free zone". See how EASY this is? I rock!

  10. Dompaczko says I live in England, which is far from paradise I know, but I fail to see how Dermahk point has anything to do with mine. Perhaps he should read what I put and UNDERSTAND the points made. You know, I give up on gun lovin Americans, fuck it...why don't you all have a ton of guns and shoot fuck out of each other for the rest of your lives

  11. Dompaczko says Ok, lets put this another way: In 2004 there were 16,750 gun related murders in the USA. There were a total of 29,569 gun related deaths overall Essentially with those statistics guns in America are killing around the same amount of service men who died in the Korean War almost every year (33,651) Gun related murders in other parts of the world with stricter gun control laws. Australia 56. England & Wales 184. New Zealand 5 and 37 in Sweden. for the same period. On Average in 2004, 8 children and teenagers aged 19 and under were killed by guns in America every day www.bradycampaign.org What happened in Virginia was tragic, but what we are seeing now is a knee-jerk reaction which is understandable in these situations, but by blaming or suggesting that more people should carry guns or be allowed to carry guns is just crazy. You are becoming (if not already) a nation of war....war on other countries and each other.

  12. RGM says I'm heard the crime rate rose in your county with knife stabbings, but thats hears say. But then again this is our country and this is how we handle. Like I said there are resonsible people with guns here, and we are not just going to start handing out guns. A lot of gun crimes are handled by criminals, but if you think you we are all going to shoot each other. Well best you stay away then... Peace... Don't forget to lock your doors friend... Good nite... From An American Fuck...

  13. Dompaczko says I think you and others are taking things a little to personally. I know that not all Americans are freaky crazy gun nuts, and yeah...you point out that knife crime has risen in this country...and that is true....but to combat it we don't suggest that more people should carry around knives, but the statistics speak for themselves. America and I think Norway (although it could be another country in that region) have the highest gun ownership rates in what people like to call the "developed world"...but in Norway it is manditory as anyone under a certain age to have a gun due to the lack of an army, they must keep them locked away and all ammo given to them are logged...this means that although they do have one of the highest gun ownership rates they also have one of the lowest gun related crimes, and this is because of the control.

  14. RGM says Well I did take it a little personal ..."You know, I give up on gun lovin Americans, fuck it…why don’t you all have a ton of guns and shoot fuck out of each other for the rest of your lives" But I'm sure it was in the heat of the moment, anyways I respect your opinion... :)
