WHAT IS A CULT?With such an overwhelming number of religious groups around these days, it is necessary to understand the difference between a legitimate religious group and a cult. What exactly is a cult? There are two ways to define a cult. The first way to describe a cult is popular in the secular media. From this perspective, a cult is a religious or semi-religious sect whose members are controlled almost entirely by a single individual or by an organization. This kind of cult is usually manipulative, demanding total commitment and loyalty from its followers. Converts are usually cut off from all former associations, including their own families. The Hare Krishnas, the Family of Love led by Moses David Berg, and Sun Myung Moon’s Unification Church are some examples of this kind of a cult. The second way to define a cult is popular in evangelical Christian circles. From this perspective, a cult is any group that deviates from the orthodox teachings of the historic Christian faith being derived from the Bible and confirmed through the ancient ecumenical creeds. These groups deny or distort fundamental Christian doctrines such as the Trinity, the deity of Christ, and salvation by grace through faith alone. Some cults that would fall into this category are the Mormons, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Christian Science, The Way International, and the Unity School of Christianity. Most of these cults claim to be Christian, and even consider the Bible to be authoritative. But they manipulate the Scriptures to fit their own beliefs. Although they may claim to serve Jesus Christ, and may even use the same terminology orthodox Christians use, their definitions are vastly different. These groups do not lead to the Christ of the Bible, but to another Jesus and another gospel (2 Cor. 11:1-4; Gal. 1:8, 9). We must therefore reject these false teachings, and “earnestly contend for the faith which was once and for all delivered to the saints” (Jude 3). And, of course, remember the Bible also goes on to admonish us that we must do this with gentleness, and with respect. Remember, you must present the message, but you need to recognize that it is only the Holy Spirit that changes the heart.WHAT ARE SOME OF THE COMMON MARKS OF THE CULTS? One of the most devastating experiences someone could face is to have a loved one involved in a cult. What are some ways we can know that a certain group is in fact a cult? The devil always hides behind a mask; and he seldom carries an ID card. If this statement is true, it is of utmost importance for us to discern a cult when we see one.The first mark of a cult is its manipulation of Scripture. The Bible is twisted to fit the leader or group’s interpretation. Private interpretations are forbidden because the leader of the cult is the only one, of course, who is able to understand God’s voice properly. Their teachings distort the historic, orthodox claims of Christianity.Second, many times cults manipulate people’s minds. There is little concern for individual thought and development. Education is usually discouraged while the convert is bombarded with the cult’s doctrine and literature. Members are called to leave or neglect their old family and life-style for a brand new one.A third mark is the manipulation of time. Since salvation comes exclusively from the teachings of the group, in many cults members spend much of their time working for their organization. Family, school, leisure, sleep, and even food are most often neglected. Finally, cults typically manipulate reality. They tend to have an exclusive “us” - “them” mentality in which society and old associates are all out to get them. Anyone outside of the group is suspect. If a religious group exhibits one or more of the marks mentioned above, that group may well be considered a cult. Jesus Christ said that in the last days many false prophets would arise and deceive many (Matt. 24:11,24). To avoid the deception of the cults, we should be rooted in the teachings of the historic Christian faith, and receive Jesus Christ, God the Son, second Person of the Trinity, as Lord of our lives. http://www.equip.org/essentials/index.asp?view=cultOn the cults, that’s the CRI Perspective. 4. RGM says O.K. I know where you come from and I don't blame you one bit...but in a nutshell I see it this way. The standard is the Bible a book and anything the deviate's from it is deemed a cult. Sorry if I sounded like a Helmet Head Dude! Peace Bro... ;)

  5. tybees says I've always been taught that Mormonism is a cult based on "Revelations 22:18-19":http://bibleresources.bible.com/passagesearchresults.php?passage1=Revelation+22&version=49, and Dale I'm sure you've had that thrown at you hundreds of times. I'm curious as to how you approach that issue.

By which definition, of course, Christianity itself is/was a cult. Incidentally - the current version of "Why Christians Were Persecuted in Ancient Rome" (as taught by the Church, as in "The winners write the history books") holds that is it was because the Emperors of Rome were Evial and they were afraid of the Pure Truth of Christianity that was a Threat to their Secular Dominance. Actually, if you check primary (or early secondary) sources, Rome had nearly total freedom of religion - there was sometimes a requirement that you at least acknowledge the Gods of Rome, but that was about the only real restriction. Otherwise, Rome pretty well let you alone. Unless you were a bunch of trouble-making thugs like the early "Christians" after they came under the influence of the Pauline Heresy and pretty much dumped the teachings of the Carpenter Rabbi as Kate (a Wiccan) calls him in favour of the much more militant doctrine of that thug from Tarsus. The "Christians" in Rome disrupted the services of other religions, smashed their idols and generally behaved as if only they had the One True Tcket and that gave them the right to amuse themselves by engaging in thuggery against all others.

  7. Dale says How do I know? I'll use their own words, that you posted above. Why do I say what I say? Let me give you details: 1) Manipulation of scripture: The Jesus that they claim is the second part of the Trinity is a scriptural fallacy, that has been foisted on the masses ever since the Nicene Creed. There are more, but I don't know how much proof you need, so I'll stop there. 2) Mental manipulation: I've seen "Jesus Camp", and I don't think any further proof is needed. 3) Time manipulation: I've never seen a married Mormon leave his/her family or work to follow Jesus, although I did server a two-year mission as an unmarried 19-year-old. I have, however, seen a couple of men leave wives and children for the cause of Christ. For further proof, see the Jonestown Massacre, 1978. 4) Manipulation of reality: The content of this post, in and of itself, is a clear statement of the us vs. them mentality that evangelicals push. Why should you believe me? Believe me, don't believe me, it matters not, as long as you give my words careful consideration. Believe the Spirit of God, do not believe in the strength of man or men. You are correct in saying that the most extreme parts of any denomination tend to make the entire denomination look bad. However, it has also been my opinion that the most extreme evangelical Christians seem to also have the most access to media, the better to stream forth their message.

  10. Dale says Nah, I couldn't care less about winning an argument, and I have never found that arguments win people over to one cause or the other; more often, they just leave the argument more entrenched in their opposing viewpoints. I simply despise hypocrisy, and I found the points above hypocritical in the extreme. I'm sorry if I came on too strong, I can be that way sometimes.

  14. fairportfan says *TBoom says:* Hey, Does Christianity qualify as a Jewish cult? Yah. Or. at least, the Carpenter Rabbi's original version certainly did; it was a mildly Dionysian offshoot of more-or-less orthodox Jewish beliefs of the day. But after Saul of Tarsus (operating under the alias "Paul") and his thugs took over, it became a militant Apollonian mystery-cult.

  21. Universalis says ° ° IT is so big many need to have gods with human faces, others think these are animal gods, some even mix these two, yet IT is even bigger... just as if one single small human being could engulf IT all, not to say to try to understand, whenever they really try to understand IT. None of them ever succeeded at such a task, even i with my mouth wide open to say diz' and dazz' still on my way the mountain is far but i already can see it's shape in the horizon, and the doors... can't i ever reach IT one day before i die ? can't i see IT's light once more ? can't i feel IT's love again ? A long way i travelled until here and right now, a longer way is still to go before all things come clear and peaceful again, many have died and many more will die, not all by my hand of course, but probably some... those i enticed into the madness, into the quest... i know that i am, barely know who i am, but i also know i got to walk on the path to the glorious light, and never to look back at those left behind, the dead and those who just sit for a rest and those not even aware there is a path... it is not my task to show them the way, only if they can see it can i offer to travel along for some time... i'm not the guardian, i'm not the soldier, but i have to be both at times when it's required. Don't loose too much time in your books fellow brothers and sisters, there is not too much light coming out from them, the truth is, as always, elsewhere... ahead...
