Scariest Mummy You've Ever Seen...
Posted almost 5 years ago

The horror on this mummy's face has survived 600 years. Who knew such old bones could convey such intense terror--frozen in place for centuries? The remarkable mummy was found in a hidden burial vault in the Amazon with her hands over her eyes and her face gripped in fear, reports London's Evening Standard. The woman was once part of the Chachapoyas or cloud warriors, a tribe that obviously possessed incredible embalming skills. In addition to this one, 11 other mummies were recovered 82 feet below the Earth's surface in a massive cave complex that was not only a burial vault, but also a worship center. Found in October 2006 by chance when a farmer was working on the edge of northern Peru's rainforest, the cave also contains ceramics, textiles and wall paintings.Little is known about the Chachapoyas, who were tall with fair hair. Adept at fighting, they were one of the more advanced civilizations in the area and commanded a kingdom from 800 to 1500 A.D. that stretched across the Andes. The London Standard notes that it is not known what the Chachapoyas actually called themselves. The name, which means "cloud people," was given to them by the Incas, their rivals and eventual conquerors. Virtually all records of the tribe were lost when the Incas were conquered by the Spanish conquistadors in 1512.Herman Crobera, the leader of the archaeological team that explored the cave, told The London Standard, "This is a discovery of transcendental importance. It is the first time any kind of underground burial site this size has been found belonging to Chachapoyas or other cultures in the region." The walls near the mummies are covered with paintings of faces and warrior-like figures; they may have been drawn to ward off intruders or evil spirits. The mummies will soon be on display at the Museum of the Nation in the capital Lima.--From the Editors at Netscape
