People have hated/loved Joe Arpaio for years..he isn't just "some Arizona sherrif." He's the strong armed, fairly loud mouthed sherrif in Maricopa County.
The good sherrif is what his supporters call a "Colorful character". his detractors call him other things. & they wail & gnash their teeth 'cause..the blowhard has the law on his side. He is a self-aggrandizing blowhard...who vigorously enforces the law.
It's pretty much in every state seeing that Fed law over rides the state. Sorry but like a fellow employee of mine once said he'd rather have our boss be a dick & law down the law than be a nice guy & let the company go to hell.
Between lax, selective, overzealous, or obtrusive enforcement..It's great to say you are tough on crime..but there are choices. Joe Arpaio chooses to enforce the politically expedient law and run his mouth off about it.
This story I relate below happened to a relative of a close family friend..not in 1964..but yesterday.
Two college students, were driving down to New Orleans because they were part of a group that helped rebuild homes down there.
In Northern LA they were pulled over for an improper lane change. The insurance on the car was out of date...so they were hauled off to jail over night....I don't know if this is important, but the driver was a white woman and the passenger a black man..
Choice...it's something law enforcement has.
Could they, by law, take these students to jail? Yes (well, I guess the legal system may end up sorting it out)
Should they have taken them to jail? That was the police officer's choice.
Could they, legally, have issued a ticket, an order to appear in court, etc. , and not taken them to jail? Yes, also an option.
Also there is a middle ground between a boss who is a dick and lays down the law and a lax boss who lets the company go to hell.
New York City has seen its crime rate go down because along with tough enforcement, there is community outreach. You can be tough on crime, but there are choices involved.
Do people need to be afraid of the police in order to obey the law?

That was true....when the police had stop & frisk laws. They've been repealed now though...and crime rates are climbing again
@CodyB: Me being from L.A. I can tell you the cops down there are stress & have their hands tied on a lot of things. At the sametime you do have some crooked cops in the LAPD. L.A. is somewhat of a losr cause IMO. One reason why I & many have left let alone the overkill laws. In some area's they fine you if your home is not up to code which can include painting your house the wrong color, or having your lawn just above 3-4 inches. L.A. makes a lot of money off trarfick violations. Which could include things like a small crack, or chip in your windshield. Like I've said before, there's a reason why they call it Nazi CA.

We need more law men like him.
wellllll......here in Rhode Island possession of Pot is still a felony....I'm not sure I'd want every Barney Fife out there vigorously enforcing......

I think there's a middle ground here..

BTW The crime in L.A. is pretty bad, worse than NY.
