The band formed in 1983 under the name Chaotic Noise. After or when former drummer Evan Warech left the band, they changed their name to Excel in 1985.Some members of the band were close friends with Suicidal Tendencies, who is from the same hometown as Excel. Guitarist Adam Siegel contributed the singer Mike Muir's projects Cyco Miko and Infectious Grooves.The band went on hiatus around 1990 as Adam Siegel went to pursue his career with Infectious Grooves. However, the band had not officially disbanded before getting back together in 1994.
