The band formed in 1983 under the name Chaotic Noise. After or when former drummer Evan Warech left the band, they changed their name to Excel in 1985.Some members of the band were close friends with Suicidal Tendencies, who is from the same hometown as Excel. Guitarist Adam Siegel contributed the singer Mike Muir's projects Cyco Miko and Infectious Grooves.The band went on hiatus around 1990 as Adam Siegel went to pursue his career with Infectious Grooves. However, the band had not officially disbanded before getting back together in 1994. After the release of their last album Seeking Refuge, Excel indefinitely went on hiatus again in 1996.In 2003, ex-members of Excel considered legal action against the famous heavy metal band Metallica over the song "Enter Sandman", which they claim borrows heavily from the Excel's song "Tapping Into The Emotional Void", originally included on "The Joke's On You" LP, released in 1989, two years before the release of Metallica's Black Album.In May 2006, singer Dan Clements joined forces with former Suicidal Tendencies members Grant Estes, Amery Smith and Louiche Mayorga in the band AgainST.
