World Food Program warns of 'silent tsunami' of hunger

Posted about 1 year ago
LONDON (AP) - Ration cards. Genetically modified crops. The end of pile-it-high, sell-it-cheap supermarkets. These possible solutions to the first global food crisis since World War II - which the World Food Program says already threatens 20 million of the poorest children - are complex and controversial. And they may not even solve the problem as demand continues to soar. A ``silent tsunami'' of hunger is sweeping the world's most desperate nations, said Josette Sheeran, the WFP's executive director, speaking Tuesday at a London summit on the crisis.Read More Hear:http://www.gateway.net/news/story.jsp?floc=GW-headline&sc=1103&idq=/ff/story/0001/20080422/1656148661.htm

  3. Universalis says ° ° ° Half the planet is starving or with low food ressources (and i don't even talk about drinkable water). Prices are rising on and on, soon most of us will not be able to buy the humblest food. Maybe that sounds quite dark, but when i look ahead i cannot see anything but darkness. A silent tsunami will soon become a screaming eagle if nothing is done. This will not remain silent for long, a hungry man cannot be stopped ! He won't be afraid of pain, neither of danger, nor of death...

  5. Doomsayer2001 says We burn our food supply in the form of ethanol in order to "save the earth" and now we, as america, are having to import wheat cause everyones planting corn for ethanol. It's absolutely insane.

  7. RGM says The will to increase food production exists, as does most of the necessary skills, but there are major obstacles, including a lack of government investment in agriculture and - in Africa particularly - a scarcity of fertilizers, good irrigation and access to markets. I would add: The technology to increase food production exists. I remember from when I took macroeconomics, one thing we took care of in the U.S. after the great depression was the lack of food . Our farming industry makes enough food to feed even the world. Granted things like weather can affect this, but like I said ",The technology to increase food production exists." I'm with Bartleby about the ethanol issue . I really question things like are petrolium companies behind this ? They have a lot to lose with ethonal and other alternative fuels cutting into their profits. I wouldn't put it pass them to have a part in this crissis . I wouldn't even put it pass our government to have a hand in this . Remember they didn't have a problem starting a war we didn't need and sending our troops to vainly die . Well for corp. Just a thought.
