Yahoo-Microsoft Battle Bolsters Google

Posted about 1 year ago
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Microsoft Corp.'s attempt to take over Yahoo Inc. has become so tortured it may help Internet search and advertising leader Google Inc. grow stronger, undermining Microsoft's main reason for pursing the deal in the first place. ``We find this to be a very advantageous situation for Google,'' Cantor Fitzgerald analyst Derek Brown said Thursday. ``The longer this gets dragged out, the better for Google.'' Yahoo signaled it is bracing for a protracted battle late Wednesday when an announcement and a media leak provided a glimpse at its labyrinthine search for alternatives to Microsoft's bid of more than $40 billion. The options include an experimental advertising alliance with Google that could lead to a broader partnership and, according to published reports, a combination with the online operations of Time Warner Inc.'s AOL. Google also owns a 5 percent stake in AOL. As part of the AOL deal, Time Warner would get a roughly 20 percent stake in the merged entity in return for a substantial sum of cash that would help Yahoo buy back some of its stock at a price well above Microsoft's offer, which was initially valued at $31 per shareRead More Here:http://www.gateway.net/news/story.jsp?floc=GW-headline&sc=1333&idq=/ff/story/0001/20080411/0713961608.htm

  2. mollifire says thanks for the info RGM. i heard a slice of the story on NPR or somewhere last nite, but didn't know the heart of it. it seemed like a reasonable offer at first, so i didn't understand why yahoo wasn't interested. makes a bit more sense now. i hate that i've become so intertwined with google products this year, but they sure do the job well. i haven't used yahoo in a long time.

  3. MrFrost says yeah I'm the same way Molli... It makes me uneasy that I depend on google for so many services (five that I can think of off the top of my head). I just don't want any Skynet trickery going on one day

  5. Scotch says I use Yahoo! e-mail and their search engine, so I'm quite concerned with their future. Considering what M$ did to Hotmail (and my years-old account) when they bought it, I will seriously consider moving back to POP mail. If I liked my Gmail account more, I'd consider moving my stuff there...

  7. Scotch says M$ gave me little choice - I lost that account years ago. IIRC, they implemented some sort of assinine rule that you had to login at least once every 30 days, and that was when I was still mainly a POP user, so that account wasn't used all that much. I don't know if they still require that, and I don't care. Because after they took over I got so much spam, I spent way too much time dealing with it, the account simply wasn't worth it.

  8. RGM says mollifire :Your welcome. MrFrost: I also use Google a lot and having had any problems. Bartleby : Does sound like it. Scotch : The only problem I had with MSN was when they shifted some their features. Of course it was a beta program, and they usually have to work the bugs, like MOG had to. But I really don't use my MSN that much. Never had problems with spam with my MSN account. Now my Yahoo account is a diffrent story. My problem is with the whole update thing with with windows. I still got 98 on one of my computers, and they stop doing upgrade for it. Like someone said on MOG, wish they make one operating system and stick to that. mollifire : Haven't used mine in a while either. I should check back and see if it has any problems.

  9. Scotch says Did you have an account before MS got a hold of Hotmail? For me, the transition was sloppy and unfriendly, so I left. I went to Yahoo! mail and never looked back - I like it better than anything I've used. Also, I've never noticed any differences using Yahoo! with 98, XP, or any of the Mac OSes. Are you talking about their applications? I don't use those...
