With a faltering economy, multiple wars, and the approaching demise of the dollar's reserve status, there are more than enough problems to keep politicians in Washington working day and night. In between handing out cash for clunkers and nationalizing healthcare, the administration is busy sending more troops overseas, escalating existing wars, and seeking out excuses to start new wars. Congress is working on "urgent" legislation to address crises like healthcare reform and climate change. The reforms are so very urgent that legislation must pass swiftly with no time to read the bills even though the new laws wouldn't take effect for several years! Meanwhile, the Federal Reserve is busy dealing with our dollar crisis by printing up more dollars. Yes, there certainly is a lot for Washington to do these days. Most, if not all, of what Washington is doing however, is more of what created the problems in the first place. Capitol Hill is filled with politicians running around putting out fires - but with gasoline. The truth is that all these fires keep so many powerful people employed and wealthy that it is not truly in many decision makers' interests to be very effective problem-solvers.

If Washington ran out of problems, think how many lobbyists would be out of a job, and how many special interest groups would just disband? Sadly, whatever is bad for the greater economy is good for the economy and job market in DC. Of course, no form of government, not even one that respected its Constitutional restraints, would magically create a problem-free society. The question is: how should a society deal with its problems? The form of government that our founders envisioned, in which the federal government was strictly constrained by the Constitution, allows private citizens and communities to solve their own problems. The role of the government should be to protect contracts, punish fraud and violence through appropriate laws, law enforcement and the courts. Not a whole lot of laws or bureaucrats are really necessary to work on just that. Instead, new laws are constantly needed to fix the problems that previous unconstitutional laws created. We have ended up with an incomprehensible maze of laws and regulations that severely constrains the people and expands the government - the exact opposite of what our founders intended. This is all because the Constitution is treated like a suggestion manual instead of the supreme law of the land. Under the Constitution, politicians' hands are supposed to be tied in most of the areas they involve themselves in today.
But somewhere along the line, politicians stepped out of Constitutional bounds and started pretending to solve our problems for us. All we have to show for it is more problems. Today, Washington politicians can busily "solve" one problem, knowing that unintended consequences from that "solution" will keep them and their friends all very busy tomorrow. The people are ultimately left suffocating under the burden of Washington's helping hands. It is coming to a point where our economy, our dollar, and indeed, the rest of the world have had about all the help from Washington that they can stand. The United States is headed the way of Rome and the Soviet Union, for the same reasons, unless we reverse the trend. I continue to hope that enough Americans will realize that the true strength of our country doesn't come from Washington, but rather the limitations placed on government in the Constitution. We must resolve to reverse the destructive course that we are on and then never again let big government problem-solving take over our lives and our country.

And the state governments are doing such a great job?
Cody B: I'm not sure what your getting at. Are you saying the Federal Gov would do a better job at things back here home. & what states do you mean, because some are better off than others. Not to say they don't have their problems, but they would be better off if the Federal Gov would stop taking so much money from the states, & stop putting their nose where it doesn't belong, & do their job. Ron Paul is right we are heading toward the way of Rome, & the Soviet Union. Like I've said, they are just going to end up biting themselves in the ass. Part of this newer mindset we call American is that we don't take crap. Our Gov needs to take care of their own.
(Just taking a stab at what I think you mean)
I prefer when he talks about fighting lobbyists..anyway I get that he doesn't like the Federal Gov. I'm saying, OK, but State Governments are just as bad or in my case worse..so I don't think what he's saying flies or is a solution.
I don't think you can say they're all worse. Where I live WA, is way better than CA. You can say the Federal Gov maybe worse than some states. But you can't say over all they're worse IMO. Medical is better in WA than a lot of other states. The hopitals, & doctors are better up here than CA. I think a lot of these problems could be easier to handle at a state level. The Federal Gov isn't letting than happen, & not giving states a chance. The Federal Gov is way worse in handling things. I just heard they are not giving Social Security raise's next year, & I'm now hearing Firm bail outs! I'm not really for Social Security, but it's a system that's been put in place and some people have nothing but that to depend on.
I'll say this, the Federal Gov condones the lobbyist by their actions. How long have people complained about them, and they're still there. The Federal Gov is the problem in the end. It needs reform, & do what it's suppose to do. We should be at war with Mexico for violating the treaty of Guadalupe. Letting their citizens into the US illegally is an act of war according to the treaty. We shouldn't be messing around in the Middle East anymore.
Again, I get what you are saying, and I didn't say one is better or worse than the other. What I am saying is that I don't trust states any more or less than the fed. Don't think that lobbyists don't roam the halls of state and local govs either..and there's less media coverage there (usually) so they can do more.
It is always about the money..
You want a war with Mexico? Why not just open the border and let the market sort it out?
"Again, I get what you are saying, and I didn't say one is better or worse than the other. What I am saying is that I don't trust states any more or less than the fed. Don't think that lobbyists don't roam the halls of state and local govs either..and there's less media coverage there (usually) so they can do more."
I hear ya, thanks for clarifing that up for me. I've seen the labbyest at the WA state capital in Olympia.
"It is always about the money.."
In the end it's all about the power, & control. It's like what Aaron Russo once said, the want to create serf, & land owners.
"You want a war with Mexico? Why not just open the border and let the market sort it out?"
I don't want war with them, but I think our Gov should be more stern with them. The borders are pretty much open now, & thats helping ruin our economy. They need to take care of their own. I think we're pretty nice to them already, at least we're not shooting them like they do to their Illegal Immigrants south of their border. If we did open borders they'll have to subject themselves to our laws, & so far it doesn't seem like they like it so far. Our Market is a market full of cheaters with outsourcing, because of things like NAFTA driving jobs out of our country. & thats not a free market. How about this, we get rid of the NAFTA agreement, & let Mexico's economy fix itself. NAFTA was bad for us & Mexico. They should be mad at their own Gov not ours. Plus why can't they go through legal means to become US citizens. That systems exist to weed out infectiuos diseases from entering our country, so they can learn our language so they can communicate with the rest of us. Learn how our country works, etc. I have friends from Armenia who came here legally. that are more eager to learn our language than they our. I don't see a problem with natralization as it stands. Sometimes I think we should concour Mexico.
It seems to me that money=power here in the US. Money is the driving force behind everything..including why people come from South Of the Border, which they had been doing long before NAFTA.
How do you reconcile national enconomies and global corporations?
If capital moves freely (or at least fairly freely) around the world, why shouldn't labor do the same?
"It seems to me that money=power here in the US. Money is the driving force behind everything..including why people come from South Of the Border, which they had been doing long before NAFTA."
I don't mean to sound rude, but yea and? It still doesn't make it right. It's fine, just go by leagal means. We can't save the world, sometimes it just has to save itself.
"How do you reconcile national enconomies and global corporations?"
It's wrong, & the fault of the Federal Gov in over regulation, lobbying groups. Again not a free market, it's coporatism.
"If capital moves freely (or at least fairly freely) around the world, why shouldn't labor do the same?"
So is it OK with prople losing jobs here, & it's OK for other counties to take ours because of an artificially made economic system? Again not a free market, but Corp. Socialism. I was watching a documentary on HBO about the Garment District in NY, & someone made a good point by saying "What good is it having a fancy $300.00 dress now available at $8.00 because of globalization when you don't have the $8.00 to buy it?" The worse of it is that the Fed Gov, along with lobbyist have made it nearly imposible to start a company that can pay their employees a good wage. Maybe we should go to where jobs are at in other countries, & Mexicans can have America. In the end you are leaving them with just dirt, & buildings. Will they be able to make it if we left that to them, or will they want to go where we're at? Why don't they fight for their freedom, like Americans are willing to do? Sorry they & a lot of the world doesn't learn, & they will bring us down with them. Close our border's, & just trade products with other countries. I think we will help other countries by buying their goods, & us in turn selling products they want to them. Starbucks does it with South American countries, & it is helping them build schools. It doesn't infringe on their sovereignty like globalization does. Trading with China is a bad idea, they are cheaters when it comes to selling us products. Just from a personal standpoint, I bought a backup bass a few years back that was made in China. The work was shoty, mind you it's a nice bass, but it has cut flaws. I should have bought an Ibanez bass from Japan, a country we trade with, & seems to be helping our country more than our own with the Toyota Co. keeping our workers employeed.
How does a free market not trade with certain places?
How can you take the country into isolation when the world is more connected than ever before?
You seem to be against multi-nationals (corporatism), who will be the traders if they are not?
If the government and corporations are the ones creating unfair trade, how do you change that? and make the goverment all aout fair, free trade?
"How does a free market not trade with certain places?"
You just don't ,plain, & simple for whatever reasons.
"How can you take the country into isolation when the world is more connected than ever before?"
Your not, your still dealing with countries, your just limiting the way you deal with them.
"You seem to be against multi-nationals (corporatism), who will be the traders if they are not?"
US companies, suppliers ect.
"If the government and corporations are the ones creating unfair trade, how do you change that? and make the goverment all aout fair, free trade?"
Well your getting into battle of the wills hear. It seems obviously so far you can't change their minds by reasoning with them. So my an answer so far is I don't know other than by force at this point. I am up for suggestion though.
