WHERE THE HOKEY POKEY "IS" WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT

Multiply Inc. Sued by Major Label

Posted about 1 year ago
Multiply Inc. Sued by Major Label Capitol Records, and a host of other entities owned and/or controlled by label giant EMI Music, sued the company Multiply Inc. in the United States District Court, Southern District of New York. Plaintiffs allege copyright infringement arising from unauthorized use and exploitation of original sound and video recordings by encouraging and enabling users of Multiply to upload and share performances of well-known musical groups.What gives? This sounds like EMI is suing YouTube type service. But, after casually visiting Multiply's website, which boasts "Multiply makes it easy to create, share and discuss your blog, photos, videos and music with more of the people you know, and less of the people you don't"; it looks like this is more of an online storage site, giving users their own "homepage" to share with the world. But, is this any different than MySpace? Is EMI just going after the little-guy, hoping for precedential effect against the behemoths in the future?shloopy says this sucks!

  1. Anna says Sharing is bad. It will get you to hell level 3. It's worse than killing. Sharing is not caring. Major labels need more money. I should be paying 17-20 Euros for a CD without complaining. {I'm being ironic}

  2. Bartleby says Without people sharing their music, how can an artist gain any fan base? (sorry about this uggly word) It sounds like the last roars of a dying lion.

  3. dermahrk says Yes, it was easy to download tracks - directly into iTunes - from Multiply. I did it a couple of times. I generally want artists to be paid for the music I enjoy - and don't really give a rat's ass for the record co. So I don't enjoy sharing. But of late I've wondered if I was a music-loving teenager again in these times, with limited teenage funds, if I wouldn't rationalize it to fill the iPod. i

  4. RGM says Anna: I'd say the samething too cool. Bartleby: I like that, "last roars of a dying lion," the indie world is killing them. At the sametime you got them scary music lawyers. I think there other ways that an artist can gain fanbase like, good ole' fashion giging, word of mouth, Passing out demo's ect. I talk to a buddy of mine who said record co. now a days don't pay much at all. dermark: you make a good point, & I have bought recordings after hearing songs on the web. I talked to another buddy of mine who agreed with Metallica on their stance of illegal downloading. I really have no comment on that, but I have to say again...Good Point! Teens might find another way to get free music, as one kid said to me once,"you still buy CD's, download is the new thing!" Also I've heard the neo-owner's of the USA (China). They won't and don't pay for music legally in their country.

  5. Spike says Let's hope that they (The Man, the experts) figure out a new fair way to get music fans to pay for music, and to have musicians get their fare share. It's never been fair enough.

  6. RGM says Spike your dealing with battle of the will's here. It's more complicated than you think, but it doesn't have to be. But it will...

  8. Doomsayer2001 says "Gosh darn it! We can't have all these people listening to these songs and then wanting to go out and perchance buy a copy of the music! That would cut into our profits! ... Wait a second..."

  9. Doomsayer2001 says I mean, I could understand if you were making a profit by posting these songs, but not for people to listen to, that's retarded to the highest degree!

  10. Spike says Doomsayer2001, that's why I (we) happily risk receiving demerits for uploading onto Mog posts or comments streaming recordings I (we) don't own the rights to.
