WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Abba - love them or loathe them?

Posted over 3 years ago
I think Abba are wonderful. They have provided me with hours and hours of entertainment. I particularly love Waterloo. I desperately want that blue outfit. But I also love Muriel's Wedding, in which Muriel and her pal dress up like Abba for a fancy dress competition. So, do you love or do you loathe Abba?

  2. debi says I never was an Abba fan.....(didnt' hate them..just didn't buy their music or seek it out). However last year I saw Mama Mia on Broadway and it was great. The music is infectious. I didn't realize how many of their songs I already knew that were in the show.

  3. QueenofHell says I really like that mash up Neill. Thank you. I haven't seen Mamma Mia. I haven't been tempted, despite loving Abba.

  8. Joxley says Everyone loves a bit of ABBA I think. (not very)Interesting fact #1: To avoid tax ABBA filtered their money through a Swedish bike factory (not very)Interesting fact #2: During the 1980s the Soviet Union didn't have any cash to pay ABBA with, so instead for every record sold in the USSR the band received an oil allocation.

  9. thill says I have to admit that i played some ABBA songs to the point that i can barely listen to them again but one of my favorite songs is "ON AND ON AND ON" off Super Trooper. I cannot listen to ABBA without thinking of Muriel's Wedding. Not that that is a bad thing.

  10. Dale says I love me some Abba. I even have Erasure's Abbaesque, and that didn't cure me of my love for Abba. A friend got to see Mamma Mia, and said it was really good; I was so jealous.

  11. QueenofHell says Hey Dale! How are ya? Happy Thanksgiving.

  12. Dale says I'm doing well, thank you, except I banged my knee against a fence while playing American football in the backyard.

  13. mutterimieli says ABBA is one of those awesome bands that you have to take in spurts. They're great but if you listen to them too much it'll drive you insane I'd love to see Mamma Mia one day, I tend to love musicals and how much flashier can you get then the 70's?

  15. Mike the Knife says Abba hits good. Abba & the Bunnymen good. "Muriel's Wedding" good. "Mamma Mia" bad.

  16. QueenofHell says I'm with you there Mike; although, I haven't seen 'Mamma Mia'. I don't wish to.

  17. ivylander says It should be a rule of thumb. If you like the musician, you'll hate the theatrical version. I learned this when we saw the Broadway version of "Smokey Joe's Cafe," featuring the songs of Leiber and Stoller. How could people who profess to love this music be so fucking thick? The corollary to this rule is, if you hate the musician, you'll still hate the theatrical version.

  18. Heli0tr0pe says DANCING QUEEN = one of best all-time songs the rest...eh.

  19. KurdtStrummer says No offense to anyone...but I can't fucking stand them! Everytime I'm at work (I'm a bartender) and someone plays some I cringe and bleed inside. Not my cup o' tea, at all. I'd be happy if I never heard them again. ESPECIALLY, Fernando and Dancing Queen...UGH!!!

  20. QueenofHell says Fair doooos. I don't take offence. I understand why some people hate them. I don't like Fernando either.

  21. ivylander says Yes, "Fernando" is utter tripe. So is "Chiquitita," "Waterloo," "Does Your Mother Know?" and any number of their hits. But there was a sweet spot in early/mid-career when they threw out some of the most sublimely conceived pop music imaginable. "SOS" is an utter classic. So is, say, "Mamma Mia." Yes, the words to that song are dumb, but so are the words of many pop classics. What I love about "Mamma Mia," apart from its stick-in-the-brainpower, is the way the arrangement totally subverts pop music convention by having the chorus cut the volume in half. (It's such a given that one barely even notices anymore, but virtually every song with a strong chorus roars into it so that you can't ignore it.) The bottom line on Abba, I think, is that they are supremely silly (which means you can loathe them) and, when on the top of their game, exquisite pop craftspeople (which means you can love them).

  22. kb says abba allowed outloud singing and 90 mph driving from boston to burlington, making it near the three hour mark. mama mia in sf-dorky fun. and i loved to hear phish play "waterloo" at waterloo, nj. abba's website is depressing, though.

  23. Heli0tr0pe says hey Joxley - factoid #3, i heard that about 10 years ago, ABBA turned out an offer to reunite and tour. the sum? $2 BILLION. that's right - $500 million apiece, and they all refused.
