WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Musical Arts and Crafts

Posted over 3 years ago
Last night I decided to do a little arts and crafts project. I was unpacking the 500th box of crap into my little one bedroom apartment when I came across some old 12"s my grandma had tried to throw away decades ago but had somehow managed to be added to my load of crap. I decided to make some vinyl bowls:I know some music lovers might cringe at the thought of ruining perfectly usable albums, but these bowls will be used much more often aaannnddd I made sure they were pretty bad albums to start off with. I don't think I'll be listening to a 1960's childrens birthday song record or a second copy of "The Sting" sountrack. Engelbert Humperdinck is one gorgeous fella but it's probably better off that a copy of one of his 69 releases (and I'm not even exagerrating) is no longer playable.I'd say the craft project was quite successful. Here are some instructions in case you decide to clean out your vinyl collection but can't bear to completely part from them:-Heat oven to around 210-230 degrees Fahrenheit-Place albbum on top of an upside down oven-safe bowl (size doesn't really matter for this bowl)-Plave album and bowl in oven for 3-5 minutes-Once album starts to droop onto bowl, remove album from oven (be careful, it'll be a little hot) and push the album down into a bowl with a diameter slightly smaller than 12". -The album will not stick onto the bowl and will harden in a few minutes. Also: Try with 7"s!

  2. Dean Browell says Those are awesome... It's funny, while I cringed at first, then I could see these bowls becoming my favorite type of dinnerware and wishing I'd had used cooler albums... hmmm... I mean, c'mon- a Synchronicity salad bowl? How cool would that be?

  3. Puffmagic says I've seen this done, never tried it myself. I have made a clock out of an old 7" single, that was pretty cool. Nice job!

  4. Direlander says thats a really great Idea, my brother just build wallclocks out of shapediscs. A bowl for chips, peanuts & brezels out of a old LP is a nice eyecatcher. Good Work!

  5. smithco says Just don't use it as a soup bowl: there's still a hole on the bottom.

  6. Tyler says wow. the mind is churning, and i've come to realize that the possibilities are endless! think of it, you could make an entire dining set. bowls, smaller bowls(soup or some such thing, if you filled the hole), plates, bread plates, tribets(sp?), etc. retro dining status.

  7. Kusela says I am a huge collector of both old childrens birthday party music and Engelbert Humperdinck. How could you do this to these ulta rare finds. Does anybody know how to repair the damage this person has done..... Just Kidding Cool Idea. I could probaly make more money selling these at a yard sale than the actual album. I have a wack of my grandmas Zamfir albums that would serve her memory better as popcorn bowls than frisbees. Mike

  10. princesszyrtec says This is a sweet idea. It reminds me of an episode of Trading Spaces, where Hildy covers one wall of a room in vinyl records. Of course, she also spraypainted the girl's upholstered chair that was given to her by her grandma. And say hey, I used to live in Sacramento and worked for Chico Community Publishing - Sacramento/Chico/Reno News and Review. I moved back to Ohio in 1999, but I still have my business cards. Good times. There is a band from Houston that titles itself the only authentic Scottish band from Texas, and even though they are no longer together, their music is fantabulous. (That's another useful adjective you could use) I saw them perform twice in Toledo, and one of their favorite destinations was Chico. They even wrote a set of reels about Chico - "Back to Chico: Glass of Beer / An Droichead Beag / Korgi". I don't think their CD was mogified, so no listening samples. Boo hoo. If there were only a way.... Well, that was completely off topic. Thanks for your comment on my post, by the by.

  14. Radiohumper says Oh how too funny. I got a whole bunch of those bowls as gifts over the three years I was a preschool teacher. Two Tom Joneses and a Liberace, but no Englebert Humperdinck.* The 7-inch is an excellent idea! They are the perfect size for a standard Trader Joe's bag of wasabi peas or chili peanuts. Thanks for posting this. : ) *He had a summer replacement show when I was about four years old and I can still vividly recall falling asleep in front of the television and jolting awake out of nightmares inspired by his horrifying lips.

  15. Radiohumper says ...okay, I'm sorry, I have no idea why that middle part was bolded. I wanted to make a footnote about Englebert, and that's how it came out. : ( And let that be a lesson to all who refuse to 'preview' before hitting 'publish'. Thanks for the visit and for adding me.

  17. stevegoz says Many many years ago, we stuck a co-worker's Nitzer Ebb CD in the pizza oven for a few minutes to prevent him from ever putting it on the stereo again. Then we nailed our new piece of art to the wall. Would that we'd done something more functional with it like you have....

  18. zoolander says Well, I guess the whole vinyl vs. CD debate is over now. This was the final nail in the CD's coffin. The vinyl wins hand down. Try this with a CD, if you can. Sure, they make for pretty fireworks when microwaved, but... ...you can't beat the fantabulous vinyl bowl!!! Please, marry me. Oh, OK. I'll wait in line.

  20. melmaples says btw, a good fix for the hole in the bottom is a dab of aquarium sealant... silicone, baby.
