California- Leaving and Returning

Posted over 3 years ago
I recently left the state for a month. Before leaving I couldn't stop listening to "California" by Oakland's Rogue Wave. Here are some of the lyrics:Screw CaliforniaAnd friends that are never thereAnd places that they oughtaPretend that they even careFrom a false family, she could light you upLike a holiday tree in the summerSo lead us thereSo screw CaliforniaAnd ice that will never meltFrom hearts of the modernChildren of CiceroAnd then a few days before I was supposed to return, I couldn't get Joni Mitchell's "California" out of my head. Here are a few verses:Still a lot of lands to seeBut I wouldn't want to stay hereIt's old and cold and settled in it's ways hereAh, but CaliforniaCalifornia, I'm coming homeI'm going to go see the folks I digI'll even kiss the sunset pigCalifornia, coming homeI met a redneck on a Grecian isleWho did the goat dance very wellHe gave me back my smile,But he kept my camera to sellOh the rogue, the red red rogueHe cooked good omelettes and stewsAnd I met have stayed on with him there But my heart cried out for you, CaliforniaCalifornia, I'm coming homeOh make me feel good, rock and roll bandI'm your biggest fanCalifornia, coming homeOh it gets so lonelyWhen your walkingAnd the streets are full of strangersAll the news of home you readJust gives you the bluesKind of a big difference in the tone of the lyrics. Kind of a big difference in my opinion of this state. Oh, and besides the obvious similarity in song titles, it's random that Joni uses the word "rogue" in the song.

  1. whatevernevermind says Not as happy, but I'm a huge Luna fan, so for me it's "California (All The Way)" Well she followed him from Phoenix out to Californ And then she passed out on the bed And all the little things he never even asked her for She simply smiled and shook her head Why can't we smile just like we used to Why don't you figure anymore Why has my sympathy now turned to malice It doesn't matter anymore And now I realize I'm livin' like a trucker does Although I haven't got the belly And though she followed me form California all the way I only wanna watch the tele Why can't we smile just like we used to Why don't you figure anymore Why has my sympathy now turned to malice It doesn't matter anymore He asked please stop quotin' Rodney King when in your postcards Can't understand it anymore And if your gonna read your poetry aloud to me I'll have to show you to the door Why can't we smile just like we used to Why don't you figure anymore Why has my sympathy now turned to malice It doesn't matter anymore

  2. kmeaston says And of course, you can't forget the Dead Kennedy's "California Uber Alles": I am Governor Jerry Brown My aura smiles And never frowns Soon I will be president... Carter Power will soon go away I will be Fuhrer one day I will command all of you Your kids will meditate in school Your kids will meditate in school! [Chorus:] California Uber Alles California Uber Alles Uber Alles California Uber Alles California Zen fascists will control you 100% natural You will jog for the master race And always wear the happy face Close your eyes, can't happen here Big Bro' on white horse is near The hippies won't come back you say Mellow out or you will pay Mellow out or you will pay! [Chorus] Now it is 1984 Knock-knock at your front door It's the suede/denim secret police They have come for your uncool niece Come quietly to the camp You'd look nice as a drawstring lamp Don't you worry, it's only a shower For your clothes here's a pretty flower. DIE on organic poison gas Serpent's egg's already hatched You will croak, you little clown When you mess with President Brown When you mess with President Brown Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy did a nice little update for Pete Wilson (back on the Virus 100 compilation). Amazing that noone has done the (perhaps too) obvious rework to apply it to der Governator yet.

  7. stackdj says Back to California? I should be leaving California. Been here 5 years and now somehow I feel stuck. I am tired of lots of the mess.. it is total crap, yet.. anywhere you go is totally bunk no matter what.. so the only real reason be somewhere, is someone else, because that is really what makes things what they should be.
