I recently left the state for a month. Before leaving I couldn't stop listening to "California" by Oakland's Rogue Wave.
Here are some of the lyrics:Screw CaliforniaAnd friends that are never thereAnd places that they oughtaPretend that they even careFrom a false family, she could light you upLike a holiday tree in the summerSo lead us thereSo screw CaliforniaAnd ice that will never meltFrom hearts of the modernChildren of CiceroAnd then a few days before I was supposed to return, I couldn't get Joni Mitchell's "California" out of my head.
Here are a few verses:Still a lot of lands to seeBut I wouldn't want to stay hereIt's old and cold and settled in it's ways hereAh, but CaliforniaCalifornia, I'm coming homeI'm going to go see the folks I digI'll even kiss the sunset pigCalifornia, coming homeI met a redneck on a Grecian isleWho did the goat dance very wellHe gave me back my smile,But he kept my camera to sellOh the rogue, the red red rogueHe cooked good omelettes and stewsAnd I met have stayed on with him there But my heart cried out for you, CaliforniaCalifornia, I'm coming homeOh make me feel good, rock and roll bandI'm your biggest fanCalifornia, coming homeOh it gets so lonelyWhen your walkingAnd the streets are full of strangersAll the news of home you readJust gives you the bluesKind of a big difference in the tone of the lyrics. Kind of a big difference in my opinion of this state. Oh, and besides the obvious similarity in song titles, it's random that Joni uses the word "rogue" in the song.
