WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Life is All About Second Chances.

Today I bought 2 tickets to see Secret Machines at the Crystal Ballroom on October 19th. This is good for two reasons, one, that Secret Machines is a great band and, two, that I went to see them once before and left soon after they came onstage. Why? Let me tell you a little story about the time I went to see Secret Mahines open for Interpol on October 24th, 2004. I'd gotten dumped by my girlfriend of 7 years about 8 months earlier and in August of 04 decided to move away to a tiny town in the middle of nowhere. When I heard about Interpol playing in Portland I tried to get me some tickets and scheduled a trip up to town to see the show, however I wasn't able to get the tix but decided to go visit my family anyway. Now I hadn't seen my ex since I left at the end of July, which was the longest we'd been apart since about 1997 aside from when I was at college so when I got into town she called me up and wanted to talk. Apparently she had tickets to the show and her new boyfriend listens to heavy metal so wasn't interested. I told her no, but being still fragile and lonely I caved in when she started to beg. I figured we'd sit through the show, perhaps awkwardly, leave and that would be it. She'd go home to her new boyfriend and I'd go home to a bottle of schnapps. I drove to her place and we took her car to the show. It all went downhill from there. I was so conflicted and nervous and emotional about seeing her and being next to her that I panicked. About 10 minutes into Secret Machines and way before Interpol I told her that I couldn't handle seeing her and left her there at the show, hopped on a bus and rode back to her place to get my car. That was the last time I saw her in person until about 9 months ago. But that's beside the point. The point is that I get to see Secret Machines again in the same place just shy of 2 years later with my fiancee whom I love to bits. If only Interpol were there again it would be a perfect way to replace that horrible night so long ago.So there's my little story. I'm bored at work and apparently have no problem with sharing my personal life with a bunch of people I've never met. So there.

  2. Puffmagic says Time heals all wounds, as I've found out. Also drinking. But I don't recommend that to anyone.

  3. Jorobot says A Secret Machines show heals all pain. Seriously. I think they got a Nepalese guru to bless their lasers, so during their shows it bathes the audience in the healing light of the Buddha. And "First Wave Intact" kicks my ass every time.

  5. elor says oh man, "Alone, Jealous and Stoned", would have been the perfect song to have gone home to after you fled the show. I have to say though, even though stories like that are painful to remember, they do however make you realize how damn happy you are now.

  6. Puffmagic says Excellent point. It's a shame the song wasn't around, and that I wasn't stoned.
