I just discovered these guys. They're generally classified as "alt-country" but I don't know why. I've only nabbed their collection since of the turn of the millenium so, I dunno, maybe in the 90's they were more country but what they sound like to me is a very white soul group with hints of Nashville (their home) thrown in. Maybe that's the "alt". Regadless of where they're stocked on the shelves this is some pretty fantastic music. Groovy, mellow and rich with great lyrics. Music to sit in your garage and burn incense to. Music to lie on your back and watch clouds to. Music to rake leaves to on a cool October afternoon. That kind of music. That _good_ kind of music.

Oh yeah I remember that: 'This is the song that doesn't end. Yes it goes on and on my friend'. My brother and I irritated my mother with that song to the extreme when we were kids.

Not sure which of theirs you're listening to, but probably the most universally beloved is "Nixon." I also happen to love the followup to that, "Is A Woman," which a lot of people don't seem to like as much for some reason. Pretty hard to go wrong with Kurt Wagner, though....

I can highly recommend two of their early Merge albums: I Hope You're Sitting Down from '93 and How I Quit Smoking from '95. I Hope You're Sitting Down has a very amusing song called soaky in the pooper.

If you work backwards to How I Quit Smoking you'll find a more alt.country-ish sound - but everything since Nixon moves in the same direction that Yo La Tengo and Wilco have been going (sort of) mellow, atmospheric, and such. They are currently on tour so see them if you get a chance - if only to see 20 or so people on stage at the same time.
And if you like some blips and bleeps - grad Hands Off Cuba - an electronic side project of sorts. Songs of Lambchop that have but cut up and remixed.

I like Nixon, but I love Is A Woman. It is rich and warm and is a staple record for chilling at home at cocktail hour. The song Flick kills me every time I listen to it.

Nixon is a great album - especially up with people. Although due to my inability ever to leave well alone, I actually prefer the Zero 7 remix of that song to the original (it's one of my favourite remixes ever in fact....
