WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Alice Coltrane 1937-2007 RIP

Posted over 2 years ago
in addition to her work in her husband's groups, Alice made some seriously lush and enveloping music on her own... most of what i have is on vinyl and not portable to work but for the last couple days on cd i've been rocking my favorite, Ptah the El Daoud - Joe Henderson and Pharoah Sanders together is pretty much a tenor and flute dream team! - and the live Transfiguration from '78. Alice can generate some serious weight and beauty on piano and harp, and on the live album organ as well.thanks, Alice.

  2. Kate says I had been on a serious Alice kick this year, and the news of her death was very sad. Her music has such life and joy to it, if only there were more women jazz musicians who were that experimental.

  3. Portastatic says on a completely different women in jazz channel, Anita O'Day passed away in 2006. ever since i saw her fairly mesmerizing performance in "Jazz on a Summer's Day" i was a fan, and the Mosaic box is awesome. she wore the pants (literally) in the studio, partied too hard, made great music. not experimental but certainly unique and compelling art...

  4. Kate says You know, I haven't heard much Anita O'Day. I will definitely remedy that and seek out some of her albums.

  6. eclecticworkshop says I was just riding the subway home and looked over some attractive young lady's iPod to see what she was grooving on and it was Alice Coltrane! Oh and, Joe Henderson mmmm. Joe Henderson in Japan is pure bliss to me.

  7. abelincolnjr says I was super bummed out that she passed away, I got to hear her sing indian devotional music and a small gathering back in the late 90s and then got to see her and Ravi Coltrane play with Ravi Shankar. It was an amazing experience and if you like Indian music shes got a cassette called "Turiya Sings" thats great. If not then her CD's are fantastic.
