I first found out about Dr. Octagon after reading a review of this album in Rolling Stone back in 1996. At the time I had sort of gotten out of hip hop and was listening to other kinds of music but I was still looking for new avenues and sounds in certain genres. Dr. Octagon definitely was a new kind of concept for me. Dr Octagon is the alter ego of hip hopper Kool Keith. The music is categorized as "acid rap" meets "pornocore" or you could call it "XXX porn-science fiction-trip hop". This debut album was produced by Dan The Automator and features an appearance by MOG favorite DJ Shadow on the track "Waiting List." DJ Q-Bert is the main DJ on the album. It also features Sir Menelik (aka Chewbacca Uncircumcised) on tracks 5 and 12. This track entitled "1977" is a homage to the old, old school block parties they'd have in The Bronx where hip hop was born. In it, you'll hear shout outs to all the most famous hip hop legends. 1977 isnt really one of the songs on the album that showcases the weird elements I mentioned, but its one of my favorites on there.

I love, love love it...Thanks Pete. I would say I was kinda lapsed as a head when this record came out and it drew me back in with the possibilities of what could happen on a hip hop record

I can't believe that at one time, Fresh was the new positive affirmation..Unfortunately, that's what it was when I had a radio show in '82. My DJ friend and I would try to record ourselves saying freah backwards so we could play that backwards and here it forwards..then there was slithering..dragging cassette tape over recording heads to make sounds. We had just a tad more free time then.

Yo Pete - sorry for the late comment. I'm trying to catch up with all my old MOG notifications in one night. Earth People reminds of the summer I spent working as a house painter cuz I had that song on a special "get me through this effing day" mix tape that I brought with me to the jobsites. Dr. Oct is one crazy muther. Like clinically insane.
