Lead singer Johnette Napolitano previously was in the band Dream 6 with guitarist James Mankey in Los Angeles in the early 1980s. In 1986, they signed with I.R.S. Records and they needed a new name. Their labelmate at the time, Michael Stipe (lead singer of REM) suggested the name "Concrete Blonde". It was his way of describing the mix of their heavy rock sound and their deep, introspective lyrics. The newly christened Concrete Blonde released their self titled album that year along with the single "True". The band had a hit with their album "Bloodletting" in 1990 and their pop hit "Joey" made it to the Top 20. In 1993, the band broke up but came back together for several more albums. Concrete Blonde is not really an easy band to categorize, which is good. When you put on their debut album and hear lead singer Johnette Napolitano's voice, all I can say is that its infectious. Being a big fan of alternative 80s rock, I really loved listening to this album. I rank Johnette up with the very best female rock singers. Her voice carries so much strength and sensuality. The sound of this debut album mixes so many influences ranging from 70s punk to New Wave to straight up rock and country. If you love music that has real integrity and style, make sure to pick it up!
