Arcade Fire Rocks Serge Gainsbourg

Posted over 2 years ago
There is a great article in the October Vanity Fair magazine on Serge Gainsbourg (The Kennedys are on the cover). It's an extensive article that discusses his loves; music, women, the drink and living life to the fullest. In 1965, his song "Poupée de cire, poupée de son" was the Luxembourg entry in the Eurovision Song Contest. Performed by French teen singer France Gall, it won the grand prize. It was the first of many hits that he would have into the 70's or eighties. ..Arcade Fire have a new single with a cover of that first hit song, "Poupée de cire, poupée de son". They are a band on the top of their game, as you can see here:and the "original version as performed by the lovely France Gall....

  1. 1234chainsaw says Ah, the (in)famously tuneless France Gall performance! The song seems to have become an Arcade Fire live staple as well. This was a better version than the one in their February NYC show that was broadcast on NPR, and about as good as when I saw them in Madrid this July. Especially those violins are nearly rapturous. The Belle & Sebastian version from a 2004 Black Session is a bit more controlled but has lovelier vocals. (MOG's mp3 upload seems to have gotten rid of the accented e's in the upload, sorry.)

  2. Bartleby says Along with Chainsaw, I really enjoy the luscious violins and "spunky" take on France Gall's tune. Serge Gainsbourg wrote another song which was to be his cousin's second hit (yes it's a family affair) This song bears Serge Gainsbourg's distinct cheekiness - "sucette" also means "lollipop" in French. (The "Black Session" are a must on French public radio station France Inter.)
