Song Rating: 20% Complete

Posted over 4 years ago
I have been rating the songs in my music library for about two months and have just completed 20%. This looks like going on for another eight months then!Anyway, slipping the data from iTunes in to an Excel spreadsheet I can produce the following Top Tens with average song ratings (from 1 to 5 stars):Artists1. Joy Division 3.932. Thom Yorke 3.803. Peter, Bjorn And John 3.673. Simple Kid 3.673. Underworld 3.676. Baby Bird 3.606. Death In Vegas 3.606. Strokes 3.609. Visage 3.5710. Grandaddy 3.55There is a long way to go yet but Joy Division way ahead and look like keeping on to that number one spot. New Order, the band I always say is my favourite band are struggling in 30th place, suffering from those more ordinary later albums. Thom Yorke is in at number two but Radiohead are way back in 38th place, surely they are going to finish in the top ten?Albums1. Power Corruption & Lies - New Order 4.402. Placebo - Placebo 4.003. Still - Joy Division 3.834. Worst Case Scenario - dEUS 3.805. Hail To The Thief - Radiohead 3.755. Just Like The Fambly Cat - Grandaddy 3.755. Music For The Masses - Depeche Mode 3.755. The Eraser - Thom Yorke 3.755. Treasure - Cocteau Twins 3.7510. Revenge Of The Goldfish - Inspiral Carpets 3.6710. The Art Of Falling Apart - Soft Cell 3.6710. War - U2 3.67The real top ten is littered with compilation albums, as you would expect, greatest hits albums are made up of the pick of the bunch. But this filtered down version is a fair representation of the albums I like best. I have always said 'Power, Corruption & Lies' is my fvourite album. There are absolutely no weak spots on that album and it brought along a completely new sound that has been imitated by many bands since. At the very rock bottom of my charts, Gary Numan is battling it out with Goldie Lookin' Chain in the Artists chart with the likes of Magic Numbers, Jethro Tull and Antony And The Johnsons just in front of them. Equally, The Best Of Gary Numan and GLC Greatest Hits are at the bottom of the albums chart. At this moment I am listening to 'I Can't Stop' by Gary Numan and it's driving me mad, it's going to get a big fat lonely zero!

  1. dermahrk says I use the ratings system a lot myself, but to manage my library and playlists, not as indications of quality. But I want to warn you - ratings and other information (date added, last date played) do not seem to reside permanently in iTunes. I suspect that they are instead somehow inside of the iPod itself. If you have to reset or reload your iPod, it will all disappear. So be warned...

  2. Pip says If you back up your iTunes Library database file that resides in the iTunes folder you will not lose your ratings. I transferred to a new notebook from my PC recently, I had already started this ratings nonsense but was able to just insert that database file on to the new notebook computer. And I keep using a program to transfer all the data in to Excel anyway. I am rating the songs mainly for playlists but the Excel facility is a useful by product. But I am fully aware that the ratings can vary depending on what mood you are in at the time. What the hell, I'm enjoying myself and it keeps me out of the pub! I use the following to award the ratings: 0 Stars - The song is awful and probably irritating, if I wasn't a fair man I would just stop it now! 1 Star - I don't care for the song and wouldn't lose any sleep if I never heard it again. 2 Stars - I either haven't heard the song enough to make my mind up about it or I consider it average. 3 Stars - I like the song, enjoyed it while it was on but let's move on to the next song. 4 Stars - Hey, this song is great and I wouldn't mind sticking it on again, and may be once more. 5 Stars - This is probably the most difficult part but I seem to be the maximum to songs that are over five years old and have been with me for years, the important songs that are welcomed with open arms whatever the occasion.

  3. dermahrk says Well, maybe I am just a friggin' idiot, because I lose all of my ratings info, last played date, date added - like every four months or so. I am crossing my fingers as I have just passed that mark and haven't effed it up yet. Pray for me!
