This is a new thing I'm trying... listing some of my favourite videos of all time... Self-indulgence you say? Sure, why not! About five years ago I swore off paying for cable, since there was hardly anything on the tube worth spending that much on. But as a result, I also had to forfeit music television, and after spending about an hour on YouTube, I forgot how much good stuff there was. So here goes with #1!*Eurythmics - Beethoven (I Love To Listen To)* (1987)I've always loved Eurythmics and Annie Lennox. What's not to love about great musicians, awesome writing, and classy videos? It was rather hard to pick one that I thought was the best out of all of them... and I didn't wanna be cliche and pick 'Sweet Dreams', coz I think we've all seen that one about a thousand times. So after watching about seven of them, I chose this one, a single off their 'Savage' album. It was always my favourite track from the disc. It's not very likely you'll see this video played anymore. It *was* a single, but I don't think it did very well. When they released the album they also issued a VHS with a video for every song on the album, even the non-singles. As a result, the videos told kind of a story, or at least had running themes throughout the program. One of them was summed up by Annie's first sentence on the video: "Some women think they don't count." And the video for 'Beethoven' exemplifies how true this isn't.We are assaulted with jarring images of the woman's home life: starting off with her knitting neurotically, then changing to demonstrated anger about her position in life, feeling that she's trapped as a housewife... taking her frustrations out by cleaning everything in sight, while an unruly 'princess' child wrecks everything again in her wake... until she finally gets fed up and reinvents herself in the most diametrical way possible. Everything's edited so well, calm at the start building up to a climax while telling a story at the same time. I miss videos that tell stories, and aren't just about choreography and sequins. So enjoy this great video and stay tuned for more in the coming days.
