WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Spliff

Posted about 1 year ago
If you look closely at my recently added music or digital music library, you'll notice some pretty obscure names among some of the best artists/bands known to *hu*mankind.I'm currently working on a project for a very dear friend of mine, Ingrid. A beautiful German woman with a heart of gold. She permanently relocated to the US with her husband and daughter, oh, I'd say roughly 10 years ago when Calvin retired from the Army. She and Calvin are pretty *old school* and not too computer savvy when it comes to searching and downloading music. Anyway, I know how deeply homesick she feels and I also know how she loves old German "schlager" music. In particular, the 60's to 70's era. With that said, my project over the past few weeks has been locating old tunes for her. Luckily, there are a few German Music Groups on another site, which shall remain nameless. Those groups have made my search for old "schlager" music virtually a breeze. "So what does all this have to do with Spliff," you ask? Well, they happen to be one of the "weird" artists/bands listed in my library. When I saw them listed here (I paid no attention to my music folder), I thought, "Spliff, huh, who?" It didn't occur to me they were one of the many artists included on a "Hit Giganten" compilation I downloaded. Naturally, I gave the band a listen. Unfortunately, Spliff won't be included in my musical compilation for Ingrid, but not because of their name. I just don't think they'd satisfy Ingrid's taste in music. Then again, it might be kind of fun to include them in the mix. ;)
SPLIFF lyrics
Be forewarned, after listening to the song, I found myself singing "carbonara e una coca-cola" for about a half hour!

  8. Hermes says Let me tell you that this song was BIG many years ago over here, though I'm nearly but only nearly too young for knowing it (what implies that it has been aired through major radio stations even many years after it hype). And I'm really amazed that you dug that out - is has been some years since I heart it the last time. I'm pretty sure, that your friend will know this track, especially as she's a few years older than I am and I put it on that compilation for sure. But I don't know her music taste, so ... . Certainly a hilarious, superficial, comical and god knows what the hell else kind of a track. But ... I .... can't .... get ... it ... out .. of .... my ....head . German Schlager is something horrible to compile, I would certainly get rash and colera at the same time, when trying to make such a compilation. And again: Despite my scorn for that kind of bad trash music (there's also good trash IMHO), I somehow admire this song. Definitively outstanding amongst hundrets of songs produced at that time, that I hope never to hear again.

  10. PeppermintPattie says hermes: i'm 38 years old and i certainly don't recall ever hearing this example of german schlager. what i do recall is 'rosamünde, 'ein bett im kornfeld,' and 'anita.' alls songs of which i'm trying to forget! yet, by the same token, they take me to a happy place--sitting on omi and opi's couch watching the 'hit parade' with them! i agree with you, though, 'spliff' cannot be excluded from the list!! ;) mollifire: yeah! i know. imagine how i felt when i saw it on my mog digital music list!! ha, ha, ha ;)~

  11. Hermes says I guess, this was never regarded as classic Schlager ;). I associate it somehow with Kraan, a more experimental band, which on the other site also has some relation to Krautrock. I can't remember, where I heart it, but I heart it several times before and a long time ago. So it must have been aired by a commercial radio station or there was a documentary, where this song occured somehow. Elsewise it would not have come to my ears back then. Where you living in Germany in the first half of the eighties?

  12. PeppermintPattie says hermes, thank you for the explanation! truly do appreciate because like i said, i don't recall it as a schlager song. ;)~ let's see, 1969-1970 bremerhaven 1974-1980 bremerhaven 1981-1985 bremerhaven 1989-1990 berlin 1990-1992 bremerhaven 1992-1993 pirmasens 1993-1998 heidelberg 1998-2000 schweinfurt 2000-2003 kaiserslautern where are you living in germany? congrats on the new position, btw! ;)

  13. Hermes says Hell, that's what I call a fragmented vita. I guess, one of your parents was working for the military, wasn't he? You are by far more German than American, considering the time you spent here, unless you lived in some military shielded area. Thanks for the congratulation, I'm already very curious for my British experience. I'm in the south, between Black Forrest and Swabian Alps, somewhere in the hinterland between Freiburg, Ulm and Stuttgart. Maybe you now Rottweil, the oldest town of Baden-Württemberg, that's where I was born. Heidelberg is the closest of the towns, where you live, though still 150 km or more in the north.
