Yo Yo Ma And Me

I've been editing my doctoral dissertation and have found Yo Yo Ma recordings to be great music to concentrate by. I have loved his Brazilian album for a year or so but just borrowed this recording of Appalachian waltzes and jigs from a friend and like it a lot too (not as much, but it's good). I think it would be nice holiday party music if you didn't want to play actual holiday music.

Beautiful Ray, Beautiful Basie

Are you kidding me? I just picked up this CD at Politics & Prose in Washington, DC and I LOVE IT. It's a techno mash-up taken from a concert Ray Charles did and Basie's new band interposed or whatever. I don't know the production terms but this is a fun album and I think this track is laugh out loud fabulous. It SWINGS.

O, Mi Corazon!

I've been reading and thinking a lot about immigration issues lately and I know that this song is very dear to Mexicans. It's a song about missing home. I wanted to play it during a worship service about welcoming the stranger and immigration and this was the most poignant version I found. It doesn't hurt that it was part of the soundtrack to the really amazing movie, "Paris, Texas." Enjoy. Bendit

Dinner Party: "My Funny Valentine" Chet Baker and Gerry Mulligan
over 1 year ago

I know this is going to sound ridiculously pretentious but I actually picked up this CD by the banks of the Seine on a trip to Paris last year. I hoped it would give me some of the vibe of my favorite city and I wasn't disappointed. This is just the greatest jazz recording and if "My Funny Valentine" doesn't get you in the gut, you just don't have a heart. Dang.

Vamos Nenas

I am really digging Latin music these days, and just found this great recording of "Vamos Nenas" from a live recording. Total party song, with a great twangy guitar that gives it an edge I love. My friends love dancing to this. VAMOS, NENAS!

Rufus Does Judy

I've been ordering a little song here and there from Rufus Wainright's reproduction of Judy Garland's Carnegie Hall concert, which was just amazing and tragic and let me just say that the kid has mondo cojones to tackle it himself. This is just a sexy little number. Rufey has attitude THIS big. Let's just hope he doesn't wind up like La Garland. It might be a good idea if he laid off the hootch a

She Totally Shows Jessica Simpson the Door

I admit to being a little bit confused by the title of this song: is Mrs. Leroy Brown related to Bad, Bad Leroy Brown of Jim Croce fame, perchance? If not, they should totally date. But anyway, in case you didn't know that Loretta Lynn is a legend for legitimate reason, you can start right here and enjoy her hot pipes and crackin' band. This is a song to crank on a summer ride to the beach with

This Girl Is Hot

... and she's Burning Down the House! Bonnie Raitt, that is. I know you loved the Talking Heads version -- who doesn't -- which is all weirdy and David Byrnesy, but this is just hip-swiveling hot. An added bonus is that I can understand the lyrics when Bonnie's singin' 'em.

Love Made Sweet and Sad the Same

"Love Is Everything" is a great break-up song written by Jane Siberry from her album "When I Was a Boy."Don't try to get through a break-up without that CD, I'm telling you."Love Is Everything" is the second or third track, but she reprises it at the end of the album, coming full circle and most likely leaving you in a soft sobbing heap on the couch, but in a good way.I just ran into this version

I'll Stick With This CD

Alison Krause and Robert Plant are a pretty unlikely duo from my point of view (but I'm a music illiterate, so what do I know? Just the entire scores to about 100 Broadway musicals plus a tiny smattering of a few other things, but not much.Anyway, I am totally digging their collaboration "Raising Sand" because I'm that consumer that Starbucks loves -- an impulse buyer with the same musical taste a
