As I have written in a few prior posts, I recently had the honor to score the HBO film, The Trials of Darryl Hunt, which aired on HBO in April and is currently playing in select theaters. It is a wonderful film that offers devastating insight into the shortcomings of our judicial system, particularly pertaining to race.

Shortly after completing the film, I was approached by the good people at Young American Recordings with interest in releasing the soundtrack to the film. We decided that, in addition to selections from the score, it would be great to recruit rare and exclusive songs from some of our favorite artists for the soundtrack. The label heads asked me to draw up a wish list of artists to approach, and, sure enough, they came back to me with heavy dose of wish fulfillment - donated tracks from Andrew Bird, M. Ward, Califone, Mark Kozelek, Dead Prez, and many more. A number of artists even composed new songs dedicated to Darryl Hunt. Needless to say, the whole experience was incredibly rewarding. It was a real honor to hear from Darryl himself that he was very excited about all the interest in the project and the artists who were involved.

The soundtrack will be released online tomorrow - August 7th - and will hit stores a few weeks later. It received a nice review today on Pitchfork - check it out here: http://pitchforkmedia.com/article/record_review/44443-the-trials-of-darryl-hunt-ost

All proceeds from the sale of the record will benefit Darryl Hunt's foundation that works to help other wrongly convicted individuals, so please spread the word!

Artist: Album: The Devil Came on Horseback - Soundtrack Track: Rumors from the West

Friends:

I wanted to send a quick shout about a wonderful film I recently had the privilege of scoring - The Devil Came on Horseback - a documentary exposing the genocide currently raging in Darfur, Sudan. The film illustrates, in concise and striking detail, the atrocities occurring in the region, as seen through the eyes of a former US Marine, who happened to be stationed in area as an African Union peacekeeping monitor and documented the violence in photographs and video. The film premiered to great acclaim this winter at Sundance and is currently making the rounds on the festival circuit.

It is indeed a rare honor to be involved in a project that has the potential to impact real change, and I strongly urge everyone to spread the word about the film and to support it in any way possible.

To learn more about the movie and/or get involved, please visit: http://thedevilcameonhorseback.com or http://www.myspace.com/thedevilcameonhorseback

Here is an audio sample from the score.

And a couple of video clips from the film The Devil Came On Horseback

Something needs to be done over there. Seems like people are more worried about the impact on the freakin' soft-drink industry than the genocide, since Ukec threatened to stop exporting gum arabic. Thanks for sharing that bit of the score - sounds perfect for the topic.

Hola Moggers:

I wanted to send a heads-up to the peoples that a film I recently scored - The Trials of Darryl Hunt - will make its world broadcast premiere tonight, April 26, on HBO at 8PM, and will continue airing for the next 10 days on various HBO channels.
It was a true honor to work on this film, which tells the story of Darryl Hunt, an African-American man from North Carolina who spent nearly 20 years in prison for a rape/murder that he did not commit. I have had the privilege of getting to know Darryl at various film festivals and screenings during the past year, and he is a true teacher and an incredible example of faith and perseverance. "Trials" was shortlisted for the Best Doc. Oscar, nominated for a Best Doc. Spirit Award and won Best Doc. honors at a bunch of film festivals...I strongly recommend the film if you have a chance to see it.
In related news, Young American Recordings will be releasing the soundtrack to the film, which will include a few compositions from my score, as well as contributed rare, live and exclusive tracks inspired by the film from Andrew Bird, M. Ward, Dead Prez, Red House Painters, Califone, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Portastatic, Last Poets with Dalek, Ras Kass and many more...

Check out more about the film at: http://www.hbo.com/docs/programs/darrylhunt/index.html
