Oh, The Secrets of Ummagumma

Posted over 5 years ago
This album has added a whole new perspective to Pink Floyd that I was vaguely unaware of. Now, I of course knew that they were extremely trippy, and individually skilled (especially once Gilmour was added), but the studio album of Ummagumma is beyond these descriptions. Not only is it excessively psychedelic, but it also has a section for each of the members. In my opinion, the best by far is Roger Waters' section including Grandchester Meadows and Several Species Of Small Furry Animals. The song Several Species... is totally influencial as to the experimental style of many electronic influenced artists nowadays in my opinion. And though this was the second album out after Gilmour became the guitarist, I think it was a real turning point in the development of their style.I remember when I listened to Deloused in the Comatorium by The Mars Volta that I realized how much Pink Floyd influences their music. In Cicatriz E.S.P., they even use the same sound that is used in I think Pillow Of Winds off Meddle. In my opinion, Ummagumma, the live and studio versions display syles that The Mars Volta have since used to their advantage in both trippy parts and otherwise.

  3. SIRYOKOHOMO says Oh,,, and If you love that, you need to put "Pink Floyd: Live at Pompeii: Director's Cut (1974)" on your NetFlix queue. It surpasses anything you have ever seen when film and sound collide. Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

  5. wassonii says don't forget the power of the album cover in connection with the aural images. cover design by hypgnosis, a member of which was peter christopherson, who went on to help form throbbing gristle, was a member of psychic tv for an album or two and formed Coil with jhon balance. ummagumma is by far my favorite pink floyd album as a whole. not to say anything against the rest of their ouvre, as there are fantastic pieces and albums, but as a "collection" the flow of ummagumma is what does it for me.

  6. hippypants says Ummagumma--One of the best albums ever!!! I tend to like this Floyd period better along with Meddle as it hadn't quite tipped them over into the mega rock star area yet. I still think this album is highly creative and a bit avant-garde--I really dig the Wright piano bits among others. For another side note on this album, check out the Minutemen's album, Double Nickles on the Dime (not that they sound much alike, but Ummagumma was an influence on Double Nickles, which you can read about here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Double_Nickels_on_the_Dime I see you're a Mars Volta fan too. Their guitarist, Omar Rodriquez, has a solo album out there, which I've only heard bits and pieces of, and sounded pretty well. You might wanna track that down if interested.
